Whole Grains in the Morning: Mix Your Own Granola and Greet the New Day
Dr. Oz and other doctors who have been getting involved in Wellness and Nutrition are hopping on the bandwagon for Whole Grains, but they have little experience with what actually constitutes a whole grain food.
If you are one of those like Oz and so many other Johnny-Come-Latelies who extol the virtues of good nutrition, but spend virtually no time in their own kitchens; then let’s take a moment to define what a Whole Grain is…exactly.
What it is not…is a cereal or a bread made from whole grain flour or meal. Once a whole grain has been processed, it really, truly, emphatically is NO LONGER a whole grain. The grain is then ground into flour and it changes. The grain is milled into meal and it is changed. The grain is heated, cut, smashed, puffed, pulverized, or any other action and it is different than the original whole grain. Is that clear yet?
I am so tired of the General Mills TV commercials and other manufacturers who are making a feeble attempt to convince you that the cereal and other food products they sell are going to give you the same health benefits as that humble Whole Grain kernel. It’s not true.
Cereal is cereal is cereal..by any other name…is NOT a whole grain anymore. Please don’t succumb to the advertising lies and deceptions that indicate that their cereal will help your heart, because the research shows that oats does this. Eat the whole oat groats instead…
Bread is highly over-rated when it comes to being a healthy food and whole wheat bread is still made from wheat flour in most cases. If there are remnants of the whole wheat grains; then it will be so chewy and gritty as bread that you won’t be inclined to buy another heavy loaf. You might get a few more B vitamins and dietary fiber in whole wheat bread, but it is no longer a real Whole Grain food. Whole Grains are grains that are WHOLE.
Whole Grain dishes take some getting used to…they are going to need to be chewed and chewed and chewed; yet the nutrients are present and worthy of all the hard labor. You cannot be impatient and enjoy eating whole grain dishes…it just goes with the territory that it takes time to munch the grains properly to prepare them for digestion. If you find yourself so impatient that you won’t include the advantages of whole grains in your daily routine; then at least add whole grains to your soups and stews.
If you really need to spend as little time as possible, especially for breakfast; then your natural choice for Whole Grain goodness is GRANOLA.
You will get the most pleasure out of mixing your own Granola. This website offers a wide variety of combinations which will provide you with many groupings of Granola to grin and bear it.
One way or the other…get Whole Grains into your daily dietary regimen. But forget those cheap cereals and bread that will only bring you congestion. Granola is the ideal solution for those of us who are busy, yet smart!
