TheDoctorsTV and Oz: The Healthy Nature of Soybeans
Dr. Lisa keeps worrying her audience that the molecules in soy products might mimic estrogens and disrupt hormone levels in the body. She needs to read the current literature more carefully, so we decided that today we should direct your attention to an article that discusses this topic. It goes to show you what we’ve known for decades…that the humble, yet mighty soybean and the whole foods derived from them in Asian cultures for thousands of years is being proven to hold many healthy benefits for those who eat foods like tofu, tempeh, miso, tamari, edamame, and other foods that feature soy as one of the cornerstones to balance in the endocrine system. Let’s open Dr. Lisa’s eyes along with the physician vision of Dr. Oz and the other doctors who advise a national TV audience or write online Newsletters.
“Is Soy Safe: Busting the Myths of a Nutritional Powerhouse”
We love our soy foods and we have been eating them for most of our lives with the desired outcome of health and wellness. Miso Soup is one of my personal staples having first encountered tofu and other soy foods in an Asian restaurant in the 1970’s. I have learned to prepare tofu in so many forms over the years that I cannot even count the number of recipes that have been a real treat for my body and those that shared these meals with me. I particularly recall the delight of my customers in my Natural Foods Restaurant in Wyoming when they tasted tofu cheesecake for the very first time in their lives. The texture, the taste, and the treasures of health that came with the wonderful culinary experience was memorable. It was one of the favorites on our dessert menu!
Some of the finest chefs and cooks on the Food Network regularly feature soy foods in the dishes that they share with their viewers. If you are looking for great recipes for soy, take a look at the Food Network vault of suggestions and Martha Stewart has her fair share of recipes that incorporate many soy foodstuffs in her recipes. There are some excellent cookbooks by authors who have spent time in their kitchens or their own restaurants as we all discovered health foods in the last four decades from California and Alice Waters to Moosewood and so many others for you to tempt your taste buds with any time of the day or night!
If you haven’t played with soy foods in your kitchen; then it’s time to add them to your regular weekly food plan. When you go to Whole Foods Market, you’ll find soy ice cream that is better than any dairy ice cream that I’ve ever tasted – the Chocolate Velvet and the Chocolate Obsession are two of my personal favorites. The Vanilla is divine and creamy… Oh, I need a short break to go and indulge in a small bowl right now!
You’ll also find that health food stores carry the Tofutti products that are fabulous. The alternative to sour cream and cream cheese will satisfy that substitution in any recipe as an ingredient that is much healthier than the dairy version. There’s no end in sight to the great foods and condiments and sauces that are made from soybeans using age-old tried and true processes to derive the nutritional health value from soy.
Enjoy your soy!
