The First Lady Michelle Obama Calls for Healthier Foods: How You Can Answer the Call!
Our First Lady, Michelle Obama, is far ahead of other first ladies by calling for healthier foods for children, restaurants, and all Americans.
If you’ll recall, she planted that GARDEN outside the White House and when people come to dine at with the First Family, they get much healthier food than in previous administrations.
The First Lady is in the News today for being vocal about her platform for Healthy Foods. This is the moment when you, too, can answer her Call.

She wants to impact childhood obesity as an important issue that everyone can do something about to change the course of the health of this next generation. Recently, Michelle met with the folks at Olive Garden and discussed adding recipes for dishes for children that are healthier to their menu.
It’s a good beginning with fruit and vegetable side dishes for the children’s menu plus low-fat milk to help cut down on calories and sodium over the next year. Now, it’s not my ideal solution, because I would request that Olive Garden add organic whole foods vegetarian dishes to their menu, but then they don’t cater to people with my food preferences.
I used to eat at Olive Garden when we had to take picky eaters in our extended family out to eat, but then I realized that I was compromising my own standards. So I have not been to an Olive Garden restaurant in years. I did love their Endless Pasta campaign…
However, Darden Restaurants, Inc. is to be congratulated on their decision to work with the First Lady on behalf of all of their chains and franchises to offer healthy food for their clientele. Who knows…in time, if they realize that their economic health is tied into consumer demand, they will offer organic and vegetarian dishes for those of us who will not step foot into their establishments until they do.
In many ways, it’s a sign of the times. Fast Food chains like MacDonald’s, Wendy’s, Burger King, and others are bringing fresh salads, fresh fruit, and healthier choices to their tables. They will be able to tell that this is a smart move when they reconcile their sales and growth in market share. People will choose healthy foods that taste good when they have a choice… It’s an economic masterpiece for these companies, if they could only see the big picture.
If only Scott Faber knew my name, I have been pioneering this national issues of embracing a healthier Lifestyle for more than thirty years. He thinks that our First Lady is one voice that has been changing the landscape, but there have been millions of voices who simply haven’t had the public’s spotlight like our First Lady!
Scott, darling, I was one of the very first ‘voices’ that even used the term, “Healthy Lifestyle” in the 1980’s when I was training Lifestyle Therapists to assist people to eat healthy whole foods and engage in healthy Lifestyle choices. If only more people had listened to the vocal southern California voices in the early days, we would have tackled obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases long ago and found three generations of our youth eating well. But we welcome the efforts of the First Lady and all those who listen to her.
We recognize the shifting attitudes of WalMart and other companies who are heeding her ‘Call to Action’. Apparently, it takes a visible First Lady to make this happen more rapidly and more publicly in the media limelight that has to answer to the campaigns of someone with Michelle’s stature. Whatever it takes, it takes, as long as it happens…
What Michelle is calling for is only the beginning, there’s much more to be done. But it’s a healthy start and the public will back up this effort with their pocketbooks, their support, and their suggestions. Perhaps now, the industry will listen more carefully.
