The DoctorsTV and Oz: Do THIS and Don’t Do THAT – Healthy Tips for Split Decisions

Do you eat quinoa or beans? Sure…just as Dr. Oz pointed out, the quinoa has more protein; but there’s no reason on earth that this split decision has to be mutually-exclusive. When you eat beans with quinoa at the same meal, you actually support your body in using more of the protein in each type of food, because the food combination supplies different amino acids which are better utilized by the human body when they are eaten together. That’s where good ol’ Dr. Oz falters in his knowledge base…he has virtually no understanding of Food Combinations which is very important for vegetarians, vegans, and those who rarely eat red meat.

This is common knowledge in many cultures, like combining rice and beans, rice and soy foods like tofu or tempeh or edimame, rice and legumes or lentils, or any combination of a whole grain with a bean or legume. Split Peas with Barley is one such wondrous example: You can prepare split pea soup and have a barley with veggies side dish to compliment both protein sources. Get these doctors into the kitchen more often… LOL

Speaking of doctors and food, the DoctorsTV went into the kitchen with more avocados for hair and skin. It’s fun to lather on an avocado paste, but it is an expensive process to mash up fresh avocado while avocado oil is a better solution. While Liz had a bowl of nuts with a glass of water; Dr. Travis reminded her that they were salted (and probably roasted) nuts which were NOT as good as raw nuts. Good for Dr. Travis…he’s paying attention! However, drinking water with nuts might produce a biochemical reaction, but the oils in nuts will mix better with soymilk or almond milk or even a mango lassi. That’s an Indian beverage made with yogurt for those unfamiliar with lassi!

DO eat nuts, but it’s better if you don’t DO THAT with water. DO eats nuts with THAT Silk Almond Milk which will facilitate improved fatty metabolism. Don’t do THAT salted nuts thing, unless you use sea salt! Do mix your nuts with an Infused Olive Oil with spices or mix your nuts in a bowl with some tamari or teriyaki sauce; then they will be naturally salty and taste fabulous without adding more salt. Don’t forget to try drizzling some honey or maple syrup over your nuts and gently letting the sweet syrup coat the nuts in a low heat oven or food dehydrator, so you don’t destroy the nutrients or make the oils in the nuts rancid.

Oh Nuts Candy Nuts Chocolate & Gifts

Speaking of sea salt, Dr. Oz had a fellow who professes to be eating to live, rather than living to eat now who is using a salt grinder to use less salt when seasoning his food. We love the idea of using a salt grinder, and the folks at Celtic Sea Salt have a great selection for you.

Celtic Sea Salt Grinders

Remember that sea salt is VERY different than a commercial salt with fillers and excipients to keep it from caking. DO salt your food with sea salt from a salt grinder, but don’t DO THAT with commercial salts with unhealthy and unnecessary ingredients. We DO salt our whole grains, salads, veggie dishes, and mashed potatoes with gomasio which is ground sesame seeds with sea salt using a suribachi to blend these nutritious ingredients which add flavor and healthy nutrients to our favorite foods with the simple shake of your hand.

By the way, DO NOT use egg substitutes when you can use REAL eggs or egg whites from healthy chickens or ostrich. Free-range fowl eggs are healthy and don’t let anyone talk you out of those golden beauties. It’ the grease and butter that most people use to cook their eggs that give the ‘egg’ its bad rep. Omelets with veggies are heart-friendly and taste delicious! I know…I owned a Natural Foods Restaurant and served my fair share of delighted customers some great omelets over the years.

Red meat is DOable when you get it from a source that uses sustainable agricultural practices like these folks. Red meat is an excellent source of B12 and as long as you eat free-range grass-fed healthy beef and buffalo; you’ll DO fine with two, three, or four servings weekly. Red meat nourishes the Heart and Small Intestine meridians energetically and we all know how deficient people are when so many suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, and digestive problems. So don’t give Red Meat the brush-off just because it has more fat when that fat equals flavor! Just select your beef or buffalo from Fossil Farms or other suppliers which have healthier meat. Ostrich and other white meats are good weekly selections when paired with dark leafy greens, salads, pickled foods, and vegetables. Food Combinations once again come into our view! When doctors spend as much time in the kitchen as moms and grandmothers (and guys, too); then health care will get a boost that will benefit millions of people. We remind you to watch Jamie Oliver, a good guy chef, bring this viewpoint to you on Friday with his Food Revolution TV show! Health begins in the kitchen, right after you bring in your food from the garden.

Speaking of gardens and food from the field, that grape grower was sweet on TheDoctorsTV today. I don’t drink Welch’s, because it is NOT organic; but there are excellent organic grape juices that you can drink regularly for DOing good things for your health. When this adorable grape grower said that people should buy and eat food closer to the earth; that’s good advice. Whole Foods are the way to go! Dr. Travis emphasized this point about Whole Foods when he used the term, ‘symphony’ of colors when referring to the variety of fruits and vegetables that will promote health and wellness. Colorful pigments in our whole foods nourish all 5 Elements in TCM. Purple foods nourish the Water Element, and each color nourishes each of the five which you can easily incorporate into your daily food routine. Red for the Fire Element is found in cherries, red bell peppers, tomatoes, red apples, rhubarb, red chard, and other food with this beautiful pigment. Green foods, yellow or orange foods, white foods…all of these whole foods lend the bio-energetic signature of color to their healing powers which is a ‘big deal’ in Bio-Energetic Medicine.

Is there a color of food or clothing that you rarely eat or wear…check out which of the 5 Elements it is correlated with and I will wager that you have a deficiency or excess condition in those organs and systems. If you begin to include foods with THAT color; then you just might notice a change in THAT health issue you are experiencing! This is part of the foundation in Energy Medicine when it comes to Color Therapy, Gem Therapy, and several other uncommon approaches to healing.

Speaking of food recipes, Dr. Oz had Rocco DiSpirito on his show cooking chocolate chip cookies with beans, BUT DON”T EVER use artificial sweeteners in any food that you put into your body! That’s defeating the very purpose for ALL of this and THAT is irrational…

DO use natural sweeteners and don’t ignore the smart decision to ‘refuse to use’ artificial sweeteners under any circumstances. Now Rocco…Hear THIS and don’t do THAT!

For a day, it seemed like lemons ruled on the DoctorsTV…for so many purposes like getting rid of bad breath to reducing dandruff; lemons also are great for supplying nutrients which support your Immune System, your Digestive System, and help with fatty metabolism and detoxification. Lemons can be sqeezed into your water and over your fresh fruit or avocado, lemon juice can be added to salad dressing along with the zest, and lemons can be included with your herbal teas and healthy popsicles. Lemon Essential Oil is also a very big DO for your health, although you need to be careful with putting it directly on your skin in direct sunlight.

There are a few more DO and DO NOTs that we want to make a reference to today, since you got fifty ideas from the doctors; we thought it time to add a couple of our own to make a big ‘TO DO’ out of this post…

DO strengthen your Immune System, if you find you have allergies or food sensitivities.

DON’T eat honey that has been produced by bees living near any exposure to toxic substances, but DO use honey instead of artificial sweeteners. If you wouldn’t let your laundry dry outdoors due to allergens in the vicinity; then the honey could also be contaminated with toxic substances that you would react to when eaten.

DO wear natural fabrics made of organic cotton and bamboo.

DO drink ginger root tea whether hot or cold with natural sweeteners and lemon juice for even better results. DO chew your food and eat healthy sources of fiber to change the degree of fartiness. Is that even a word? DO add Kombu to your beans when cooking them to reduce the production of gas in the digestive tract. Kombu is a seaweed!

DO take your children into your kitchen and show them the ropes. They will quickly learn to DO the smart thing and they won’t be touching hot burners or grabbing at handles when you walk them through the reasons for these DOs and DO NOTs by Brooke…who was wonderful this last two weeks on ‘Dancing with the Stars’.

DO NOT share utensils, cups, kisses, or towels with children or adults who might transmit pathogens to others.

DO use Melaleuca or Tea Tree Oil for fungus or dandruff or itchy scalps, but DO NOT use it without a carrier or else you may burn your sensitive skin.

DO steam asparagus, but DO NOT boil the tender stalks directly in the water. DO keep left-over fruits and vegetables in the fridge, but better yet…DO go to the Farmer’s Markets and Food Co-ops daily to get the freshest produce on the planet and eat it up to prevent it from spoiling, oxidation, or browning…or molding in the fridge.

DO purchase organic Coffee Beans and grind your own based upon how much you use.

DO eat parsley and celery, but DO NOT stop at garnish to go into your mouth when celery and parsley is chopped and minced to be added to whole grain dishes, vegetables, salads, soups, stews, and over mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes along with your scallions.

DO NOT eat bananas or other foods to treat or prevent any disease, but DO eat bananas and other whole foods to promote optimal health and wellness.

DO eat fish with your salads and greens and vegetables, but DO NOT eat any fish that comes from an unsustainable source like farmed salmon. Wild salmon is the way to go to DO your eight-pounds-less-for-fish tip. Lox and other fish that are high in EFAs are excellent choices for lunch and dinner.

DO eat whole foods that sing to your ‘symphony of colors’ with all the hues and tints of the rainbow to nourish all 5 Elements and supply the phyto-nutrients that only colorful fruits and vegetables can give you. DO NOT use any artificial food coloring, even for Easter eggs or coloring frosting for cakes or cookies.

DO breathe deeply and love deeply…
