Everyone knows that there is a basic difference in various states of sleep. Each of us has experienced quick naps that just barely take the edge of tiredness off. We know what it feels like to toss and turn , never getting a decent sleep as a result.  We also know exactly how good it feels to sleep for a long and uninterrupted time and wake up naturally feeling completely refreshed and ready for all the day can bring.
The human body has biochemical processes that are only accomplished in very specific states of deep sleep. During REM sleep, we begin to enter different phases which can be measured by brain wave pattern changes. In Delta and Theta, the body is able to replenish neurotransmitter uptake and other important functions at the biochemical level. If the individual misses too many night in a row without REM sleep – it alters the function of the nervous system.
No one can artificially over-ride this physiological process. it becomes essential to get a good night’s sleep. A long and deep sleep allows for the body to rejuvenate itself. This is a time of restoration that is a vital part of our daily health routine. It is imperative that the individual gives a strong priority to getting regular good sleep.
Sleep accounts for nearly a third of our lifetime and when divided into 24 hour increments, it helps to devote six to eight hours of continuous sleep time each day.
Total Health includes a deep and restful slumber of rejuvenating sleep. Dreams are excellent indicators that you are in REM. One of the most useful health activities that will assist you in judging your accomplishments of specific health goals is to keep a Dream Journal.
