Butter, Margarine, or Ghee: Which is the Best for Your Health and Food Preparation

People have been wondering what the difference is between butter, margarine, and ghee.

Is one or the other a better choice for your health? Is there any preference for food preparation? Yes, and yes!

Things go better with butter…

Ghee is the healthiest choice for your health. Ghee is popular in the East, but it can be a challenge to find it commercially in the West. You might have to make your own clarified butter. I believe that you will be able to find it online, but be sure that it’s properly prepared and fresh before you order it from any source on the Net.

You can find recipes for making ghee and it won’t take you long to master the technique. It’s more of a matter of time than anything else.

If you wish to use butter; then at least be sure to purchase organic butter. Some commercial brands of butter have added salt and added coloring. You don’t need that… Butter needs to be properly stored and you need to check it for rancidity. It’s OK to keep a little butter at room temperature to be easy to spread. When you are baking, your butter needs to be cold, especially when making pastries and dough that you want to be flaky.

Butter can be blended with olive oil or other healthy oils to keep from browning too quickly or burning when you cook with a higher heat. Butter is often used to finish sauces and to adhere the edges of food packages like ravioli.

You might want to experiment with compound butters. You can add some herbs and spices to season your butter. The flavor profiles are amazing and it contributes to the success of many dishes when you use a slice of cooled compound butter on the top of a meat, vegetable, or whole grain dish.

I am not a proponent of margarine. It is my opinion that you should avoid it at all costs. It is not going to contribute to your health and the taste is marginal at best.

If your grocery store carries soy alternatives; then give them a trial run and see if you like them as a substitute. You can exchange many nut and seed oils for butter in most recipes and dishes.

Dr. Oz and the Challenges of the Aging Body that is Heading South from Sagging, Drooping, and Dropping Down

Although this is a repeated episode of Dr. Oz today, I thought I would mention a couple of important points that I chose to avoid the first time I watched this show. Dr. Oz was trying to be funny by referring to the sagging breasts, drooping eyelids and jowls, and stomach that is slowly moving like a tectonic plate to the southern boundaries of your bellies. It doesn’t have to be like that…

When Dr. Oz used the analogy of going south; he was talking about the aging human body that starts to sag, droop, and drop down as it loses its elasticity, collagen, connective tissue, and vibrant energy of youth. When you become deficient in Chi or Jing energies; then you encounter the prolapse of internal organs in addition to losing skin tone, getting flabby, and sinking of tissues that used to be firm. That’s a horrible price to pay for your ignorance! Regeneration is your natural answer.

The first thing that most of the cosmetic surgeons and doctors think of is a face lift, a tummy tuck, or an operation to make the body appear younger. This is the antithesis of anti-aging science. It is a travesty to use the knife when there are natural and healthy methods for reversing the aging process and restoring your youthful appearance both outwardly and inwardly.

If your eyelids are drooping, don’t go for the quick fix that won’t last long by grinding up drugs and using synthetic cosmetics. Stupid…to say the least. Lazy…to be polite. If you are not getting enough sleep, if you are water-logging your body due to excessive salt intake and excess liquids, if you are losing the integrity of your skin tissue due to eating poorly; then simply change your Lifestyle choices.

If your breasts are sagging and heading toward your toes; then you need much more natural methods than getting a surgical intervention. If your belly is drooping and dimpled, then either some Yoga, Tai Chi, or toning exercises along with whole foods and herbs will tonify your tummy. You can support the CSAs in your community along with your Farmer’s Markets and your local Food Coops. The food you will find in these places will be better for you, because it is grown in better soil using better agricultural methods by those who have reclaimed the earth for health and well-being.

Dr. Oz and the Go Green Grocery Check List of Foods for Anti-Aging

Apricots, cucumbers, blood oranges, watercress, and eggplants are fine foods. Your grocery List should include more of these whole foods and you should do most of your shopping in the produce area, but only where you can purchase organic produce. If you are throwing toxic chemicals from errant agricultural practices that contaminate your fruits and vegetables and greens; then you are going to damage your body instead of helping your body. Duh!

Silica is a needed mineral for keeping the skin tone, building the body following deficiencies, and maintaining the strength of your hair and nails. Blood oranges are but one of the powerful foods that provide anti-oxidants. Eggplant is under-appreciated in our country, but is valued in other cultures in Europe and the Middle East. Each of these whole foods are healthy when properly prepared and eaten with other foods that Dr. Oz didn’t make time to discuss.

When you begin to study and experiment with traditional dishes from other cultures who enjoy long life and beauty; then you will begin to grasp the significance of whole foods for anti-aging rather than going under the knife or being injected with a neural toxin like botox. But you can’t make the mistakes and you have to go organic with as many raw foods as possible mixed with well-prepared foods in your kitchen. It’s inevitable that you must be an educated cook that lives long and prospers…

You have to resist the urge and the social conditioning by Western Medicine to undergo surgery. You have to think so highly of your own body that you wouldn’t compromise it by putting it through that trauma. You can reverse aging through natural and non-invasive means. In fact, if you fail to do it the natural and healthy way with foods and herbs; then your choices will come back to haunt you.

Doctors are lazy and they attempt to convince you to use the knife and their expensive botox madness, instead of relying upon a gradual process of rejuvenation and regeneration. It is YOUR choice, because it’s YOUR body that they are practicing upon and you are the one who has to live in it.

There are millions of people who are shrugging off the methods of these doctors to go toward the natural and smart methods for rejuvenation. People like you! The way north is more of a journey to Balance than any other way that I could describe it for you. Whole foods and healthy foods don’t have to be bland or boring. You just have to develop some skills in the kitchen with herbs, spices, and seasoning. Dr. Oz mentioned zest and most of you don’t zest your citrus fruits when given a chance, because it takes that extra time and effort. Do it!

Cinnamon has been used in many savory and sweet dishes over the centuries in many cultures for warming the interior, dealing with pathogens, and contributing to the fantastic flavor of beverages as well as whole foods.

I recall my fond memories of my father brewing his Constant Comment tea and sharing a cup with me. I fell in love with Chai in my twenties and I know autumn is in the air when smelling the aroma of apple cider in the air when the harvest brings a hot beverage to warm us with the addition of cinnamon, clove, and other spices. The flavors are going to be in your favor with the contribution to your long life and healthy well-being.

Canned tuna? Come on, Oz, get caught up on your seafood. We are into fresh tuna and working to maintain a sustainable model for fishing now. Would you get on board?

What is going on with Oz to recommend generic cereals when we have harped about the value of whole grain replacing cereal for years. Just walk on by when shopping down the cereal aisle and opt for the whole grains instead and your body will give you back years in exchange for this common shopping mistake. Occasionally, you can enjoy cous cous or other prepared grains, but the more often you make whole grain dishes, the more years you will add to your lifespan.

The money that you think you could save on generic cereals will be spent on saving you from disease and degenerative conditions that require surgery and intervention. It’s better to spend your money on whole grains and whole foods and keep your health over the entire course of your Life. Be smart and wise in this regard…

Antacids… Forget about it! Save your bucks and buy some organic Peppermint Tea instead. If you will chew your food, instead of inhaling it. If you will use a reasonable amount of heat, instead of burning the lining of your digestive system with hot sauces. If you will eat a balanced diet, instead of eating acidic foods that don’t settle well in your stomach; then you will not be looking for an antacid. Don’t overeat, don’t drink too much with your meals, and don’t mix the wrong food combinations…

Go north, go west, go east…when you’ve been south for too long. You can repair the damage and stop the aging process when you make wise Lifestyle choices every day at every meal!

Good Morning America and Dr. Oz on Weight Loss at the Best Time of Day

Dr. Oz was a guest on Good Morning America and explained that you should weigh yourself in the morning when you first arise after sleeping all night. You are usually two pounds lighter than later in the day and you are in a better mood to deal with being overweight when you have the rest of the day in front of you.

Dr. Oz thinks that most people should get up at 7:30 a.m. and take care of business in the bathroom before exercising five minutes later. He then feels strongly that you must have a good breakfast by 7:45 a.m. to maintain your circadian clock which expects you to get hungry three times a day.

Then you should eat lunch and then dinner with a few snacks between your major meals. You need to be in bed by 10:00 p.m. for your body to secrete the necessary melatonin which quiets your endocrine system. Do not read in bed and do not keep any lights on at this time or else it disrupts your natural hormonal cycles and keeps you from being able to fall asleep easily.

It’s basic brain biochemistry and it’s sound advice for a sound sleep. However, if you are not hungry three times a day for large meals; then eat small amounts to keep your blood sugar balanced and maintain enough fiber and fluids in your digestive system to regulate your health.

Later on in the segment, Dr. Oz was talking about fiber and he looked at the table to mention the apple and other items placed there as a demo for his information. I think that he was surprised to see a bottle of Metamucil that was supposed to be for fiber. It took him by surprise and he changed his pace and his tempo in mid-sentence.

Look…don’t get your fiber from Metamucil. Get your fiber from whole foods like beans, whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruits. Nuts and seeds are also good sources of fiber and nutrients and make excellent snacks between meals.

Dr. Oz talked about Combo Pilling and Dieting trends on his show later in the day. If you are dieting, please don’t make the mistake of combining medications, especially those that are designed for other diseases. The best diet for anyone is a whole foods plant-based diet with organic foods and healthy beverages. There are no ‘good’ diets that come with pills or drugs. The most you’ll get is temporary results that can be lost within weeks or months. Then you are back to the drawing board with more frustration and less motivation.

So be smart and go whole and organic…

The segment of shopping ambushes on Good Morning America made me snarl. It’s not just a matter of consumers being lied to with foods labeled ‘natural’ or low in sugar, salt, or synthetic chemicals. You have to shop at the right stores which have organic whole foods and healthy packaged foods. You can’t expect the big grocery store chains to carry healthy items. If they do, they tend to be old and often sit on shelves for months; so they are not the freshest boxes of whatever…

Shop at Whole Foods Markets as if your Life depended upon it… Shop at your local Food Coops and Farmer’s Markets where you can find local organic produce to support your community of growers of healthier foodstuffs.

Somebody should step up and pay for the twins way to Culinary School. I hope that they eventually teach at some Spa Resort like the one in Vermont where Dr. Oz is sending two of his audience members who tried to win the pyramid game about foods today. They struggled with celery, beans, and finally got liver. Dr. Oz gave them the Spa Vacation with a lot of assistance to get the word, salmon, at the end of the game. The giveaway to the Vermont Spa will provide these ladies with a culinary experience that could change their lives. Good Luck to them both!

At least this Spa knows which foods provide fiber, instead of resorting to Metamucil…

Now be a good reader and make a pot of aduki beans with organic short grain brown rice, sea vegetables to protect you from nuclear radiation, and a fermented food like sauerkraut along with a bowl of miso soup. You might want to enjoy your wild salmon now, before you have to question whether or not any type of seafood has been contaminated by the radiation from Japan’s nuclear reactor. TheDoctorsTV and Alicia Silverstone on the Kind Diet

The doctors all seemed to be impressed and enthusiastic with the information that Alicia Silverstone shared about her new book, “The Kind Diet”. I am equally supportive of the work she’s doing to promote the healthy vegan diet!

When you approach being a vegan the way Alicia is doing it, it’s the proper way to be healthy and happy with the way you choose to eat.

Some of the dishes that she features in the book looked very tempting and wonderful. I am not easy to impress, because I used to own and operate a natural foods restaurant. Alicia is going to entice many people who might be on the fence about a vegan diet. She makes it look fabulous and taste great while maintaining the core principles for making this the diet of choice for the discerning individual.

One can be healthy and pregnant with this diet and it works for both women and men. If you have been considering the value of a vegan diet, then get a copy of this book and it will help you decide if this approach to eating is the one for you.

Alicia makes being a vegan and enjoying your food in the process easy and inviting. I wish more people would follow her lead and introduce others to the delightful dishes and the health benefits of vegan diets done right. There are healthy ways to be vegan and then there are those who think they are eating vegan, but not quite cutting the mustard.

Dr. Oz and Speaking With the Dead, Healing Life After Death, and Remote View for Health Issues

John Edward appeared on Dr. Oz today and it was the most requested show among those hoping to get audience tickets for certain topics when visiting the set for a new episode. Who can blame people for wanting to know more about Life After Death or as many of us refer to it now…Life After Life.

Dr. Oz and John Edward – Are Psychics the New Therapist?

If you have suffered loss and separation due to the death of your loved ones; then you can find comfort, closure, and the resolution of your grief from interacting with those who know how to contact your relatives or when you learn how to accomplish this on your own. The therapeutic value has been demonstrated for thousands of years and is nothing new, except to doctors who have rarely looked beyond the physical world for healing and good medicine.

While I am not of the opinion that you should be looking for guides or a team like John describes in his new book, I do feel strongly that you are equipped as a human being to become aware of other realms where Life abounds in its infinite forms and where our friends and families who die travel when they die to continue to exist in these other realms. Imagery and visions are used to communicate at these levels, almost like the crop circles and the archetypes and myths that all of us have some knowledge of with the proper education. Your ability to be educated about these realms is possible, prudent, and inevitable. You can rely upon others like John or master this ability for communication yourself.

John and some of the people who have had Readings from him discussed how to the information about and from those who have died can be healing and release grief following loss. John also described how to develop your awareness or psychic power to make contact yourself with those who have passed this plane. We have been trained to do this using the ancient spiritual science known as Remote View.

When you learn how to methodically access the information that can be found in the Bands that surround the physical body and the subtle bodies of those who have died and are no longer in their previous physical body; you can discover all of the details about that entity or person, what happened, where they are now, how they are now, and who they are with in the next step on their eternal journey.

John and many other people have allowed the knowledge to become available to them naturally or through conscious and intentional development and instruction. So it is entirely possible for you to be able to do this, too. John mentioned that information or communication often occurs through the dreamstate. This was my first introduction to this ancient knowledge and direct experience of altered states of Consciousness and the immortal nature of the Soul.

My mother died of cancer when I was thirteen years old. My father had decided to send us (myself and my three siblings) away for the last two weeks of her life while she was in excruciating pain and near death to spare us the memory of her discomfort and painful death. She wanted to stay at home and be given pain medication by someone she trusted which was my sister-in-law who was a nurse. I spent many hours every day beside the death bed with my mother to be with her, to try to make her more comfortable, and to have as much time as was left with my precious mother before she died. I was very connected with her.

Although I was reluctant to leave her side, my father wanted me to be the support system for my younger brothers and sister. I agreed and stayed with friends of the family who had offered to care for us as my mother’s life came to an agonizing end. They were lovely people and yet it was difficult to be separated from my parents knowing that everything was about to change forever for our family.

I was given daily updates on the condition of my mother to share with my siblings. Then one night I went to sleep and began to dream about/with my mother. She wanted to show me where she was going to live and how to find her when I needed her. I followed her through a menagerie of places and finally we reached her new home. She explained to me that she could not come back to me and that I would have to come to her here from now on. I memorized the path to find her. She was relieved and felt that we would always be able to be together. This has been exactly the case for more than forty years and I have visited her frequently. It’s been an exceptional aspect of my personal spiritual growth and understanding of what happens following the death of the physical body.

My father had told me about his near-death and out-of-body experience during an operation in the hospital for gallstones when I was very young. He told me that he was not afraid of death and that he knew with certainty that human beings survive death and can be conscious and aware of the experience. He decided to return to his body to raise me and enjoy his family and business Life. I had already been experiencing out-of-body journeys as a child before he shared his experience with me, so I believed what he told me without fear or hesitation. Later in my teens after my mother’s death, my father and I read Monroe’s book and often discussed these topics. It took me into my university work in Psychology to help people to address all stages of Life, including Life After Death.

I used to do Readings like John does and have had many incredible experiences in this field. It does help the living who have lost their relatives to know more about that person’s passage. It brings closure for this Life and opens the door for expanding the awareness of different realms or planes of existence. There are seven and each of us possesses seven bodies to wear or use while in any of the seven. These planes or fields of existence correspond to the seven Seals in the body which are mistakenly referred to as chakras and are located where the glands of the endocrine system are found in the physical embodiment. The two Bands are comprised of these seven bodies and you dwell within these Bands of energy which are the very basis of Bio-Energetic Medicine.

You came from these planes to incarnate into the physical body and you will inhabit one of these bodies following the death of your physical body which is often referred to as a garment. Dying is as simple as changing clothes and opening a door into a new room to live in a different house. You can travel in your subtle bodies to these realms and visit your relatives or others who dwell upon these planes. It’s all a part of a never-ending evolutionary spiritual process. You can communicate with those who are in any of their subtle bodies. This gives comfort, healing, and continuity following separation at the physical level of our immortal Journeys.

John and many of us can access information and details and images about the people and the places with natural ability or practice through training. You can rest assured that your relative continues to exist, you can be certain that there is Life after Life, and you can be sure that death is but a transition between worlds. This knowledge eliminates the fear of death and prepares us for the loss of those we love or care for when their time comes. They are not lost to us when we can find them and continue to interact with them. You can learn to consciously leave your body and determine the moment of your death and departure once you master this yourself. Healing and a sense of well-being comes with awareness and experience in these realms. The continuity of Life unfolds for you in so many ways that you are better equipped to feel a genuine gratitude for Life in a myriad of forms. It’s a beautiful thing!

This is the knowledge that gives you the understanding that all Life and form is energy first and then manifests in the material world as matter only to return to energy in a body that the immortal Soul chooses to inhabit in any incarnation, reincarnation, and the states between lifetimes. It’s going to take you into areas that are spiritual and yet it gives you a greater appreciation of our physical lives. Speaking with the dead who are alive and living beyond your vision is one aspect of the never-ending journey!

TheDoctorsTV, Dr. Oz, and Oprah: What Would You Take With You During an Earthquake?

If you suddenly found yourself in a situation like millions of Japanese people near Sendai, Japan in an earthquake and coming tsunami; what would you do?

What would you take with you during an event of monumental proportions, knowing that you might not have a home or vehicle to come home to? What would the doctors like our favorite physicians on TheDoctorsTV and Dr. Oz recommend? What would Oprah do? What advice will you take to heart?

I am more of a Martha Stewart kind of person when it comes to being prepared and ready to go with good things. But many of the people who are in the public light will tell you to have a few basics with you…just in case.

The doctors and the ladies of TV who invite experts to share information with you will tell you to have these things with you during times when a natural disaster strikes close to home, to work, to school, or where you are traveling:

Contact Information for relatives, family, co-workers, media, medical facilities, police

We would add:

OK…that’s the short List. But you get the general idea. You need to carry what you might need in any emergency to get you to a safe and secure destination one way or another fully clothed, fed, and watered.

If you’ll notice that it’s taking the better part of 48 hours to just get to the sites that are inundated by the quake and tsunami; then you will comprehend why we are telling you that it’s necessary to be ready for at least three days to fend for yourselves while help is on the way.

Roads and bridges, railroad tracks and airports, waterways and other modes of transportation may not be accessible to either you or emergency response personnel. You have to be able to stay in a relatively safe place or be able to travel to a destination that is safe until the initial chaos is over.

Any store will carry purified water in small containers that you can put into your BackPack. When you go to your local Whole Foods Market or health food store, you can get healthy snacks like organic nuts, seeds, dried fruit, and other healthy snacks.

TheDoctorsTV and Celebrity Health Questions and Concerns

The doctors answered many questions and addressed some of the concerns that a few well-known celebrities posed on TheDoctorsTV show today.

I loved the segment with Naomi Judd who talked about Hepatitis C. She stated that she used holistic methods to cure the disease that will be silently killing more people annually than AIDS. Dr. Travis seemed a little perplexed that she used the word, ‘cured’ when talking about Hep C, because most people have to learn to live with it. I had hoped that he would ask her more about what she did, but he will save those questions for another day.

Of, course, there was the usual interest in buttocks and implants. Dr. Jim made some humorous comments about winning a contest in his curious past. Dr. Drew drew attention to Beyonce and her shapely figure. Then there were the pictures of Scarlet and Angelina who’s lips and eyes and faces are the ideal. Dr. Drew is only too eager to offer you his cosmetic surgical expertise. However, I take exception to something that Dr. Lisa said.

Dr. Lisa and Dr. Drew tried to tell the audience that the way to deal with eye twitching was to get a botox injection. Rubbish! That’s the fool’s easy way out. If your eye is twitching, then all you need is to take more trace minerals in supplemental form. Most people who are SERIOUS about their health who choose a vegan or vegetarian diet are careful to get adequate amounts of B12. They are healthier than their meat-eating counterparts in our society! Your Life Depends Upon Preparedness: Japan’s Quake and Tsunami Drive Home This Point

I blogged on Prepare in Time about the 8.9 Quake and tumultuous tsunami that hit Japan last night. What I want you to know is how to be Prepared where you live for a comparable event near you, so you can save your Life by being ready for such a natural disaster that could happen in the blink of an eye.

Preparedness is nothing new for us. We started our first Food Storage program about forty years ago when living in Wyoming. Then we prepared for more diverse situations when living in California, Colorado, and Washington. There’s always more to do to make sure that you have all of the bases covered, but you have to start somewhere.

While you are getting your Preparedness supplies, so you won’t have to endure hardship while you wait for assistance to arrive; you will have the ‘peace of mind’ that comes with knowing that you have on hand exactly what you might need to get by with food and water and other basics for days or weeks until power and order is restored after this type of natural disaster. It comes with the territory.

Then when you take other factors into consideration, you can prepare for nuclear radiation exposure, fires, toxic fumes and gases, loss of power, lack of resources at the local level, and trauma care for medical needs. All of these things will vary in accordance with the area that you live in and the nature of the natural disaster. But you have to be ready for anything and everything…

Watch what happens or doesn’t happen in Japan over the next few days and weeks and months ahead of us. Rescue and relief efforts will take time to reach those who need help the most. Loss of life and injury with extraordinary stories will be told – some exceedingly sad and others that inspire the human spirit to survive in the worst of situations. Watch to see who helps who, who needs help, and who is stranded and left helpless to fend for themselves.

It’s important to learn from these events and this is the lesson for you. It’s time to be prepared, because an event of this proportion could happen near you at any time and you need to be ready to take care of yourselves. Even the Japanese people who are very well-prepared and trained for these events are trembling in their shoes right now. The magnitude of the quake and the resulting tsunami has made history!

You can get by with emergency supplies that will last you for two weeks, but you should plan for several months to be sure that the stores are restocked and the power comes back on after restoring extreme losses. These things take time. Water is probably the most important situation. Praying won’t cut it. Food is the next item on your Preparedness List. Wishing that you had stocked your pantries won’t cut it. You have to plan for all of your needs when store shelves are empty or under tons of steel, leaving you to your own devices.

It’s not enough to have dry beans and whole grains in your Food Storage. You have to have water to cook the beans and the grains with and fuel for the fire or stove. You have to know that you might have to prepare your meals without electricity. You have to have what you want in your home and office, stored properly, and enough to last you for a long time. Who knows how long it will take for help to arrive! You might be on your own for weeks or months on end…
