Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution Ends on a High Note for Los Angeles and the Nation: We Must Do Better For Our School Lunch Programs

June 25th, 2011

I was glad to see the changing of the guard at the LAUSD and the man who is now in charge started to listen and respond favorably to parents, students, the concerned public, and to Jamie’s show, “The Food Revolution”.

It’s more of an evolution, when you watch this final episode of the season. The Chefs that Jamie recruited for his competition for the students were proof that food in our restaurants has evolved and that the Chefs were all appalled and refused to eat the lunch that Jamie offered to them comprised of the junk that passes for food in our public school lunch programs.

The Chefs wouldn’t eat it. They wouldn’t even feed it to their dogs, let alone to their own kids! I would have also declined the processed food that was on the plate to make the point that our students are getting inferior food every day that causes health problems like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer. No wonder our students are behind the ‘norm’ for educational proficiency when compared to other educational institutions around the world. They are eating things that do not nourish their bodies, support their brain function, or allow them to focus their attention on their studies.

We MUST do better!

It’s not a matter of politics, it’s a public trust that we owe to future generations. It’s not a matter of economics, it’s a matter of putting money into our food service system as an investment in America’s future.

I eat only organic foods and we manage to fit this into our budget. Certainly the LAUSD has enough intelligence to meet the task to make the changes to healthier food items to put on the plates of students. Even the garden with the raised beds in the West Adams school yard proves my point. The curriculum can teach students to grow food and cut the costs of food measurably while getting fresh produce, herbs, and greens from the beds during the school year.

The students who participated in the Chefs competition made me smile with happiness and hopefulness. These kids love to cook and they picked up some skills and creativity within minutes of being mentored. That’s astonishing! I hope that the school board, teachers, parents, and the public take notice of their enthusiasm, dedication, and interest in being engaged in food preparation. I saw some careers begin during this episode which will blossom as they go to the CIA (Culinary Institute of America) and work in the food industry. I am willing to bet that a good number of those kids will continue with their interest in food…healthy food.

Jamie ended with a request. He asked that all of America continue to be involved with this transformation of the public school system’s lunch program. The first step is to get rid of sugar-laden chocolate and strawberry milk from the lunchrooms. The next step is to ensure fresh produce and the devotion to making food from scratch. It’s a task worthy of everyone’s attention.

YOU can visit ABC.com and find Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution website or do a Search here on my Blog to get the URLs. Let the high note that this season ended on keep everyone moving forward for the sake of our children. It can ONLY get BETTER!

I would ask you to visit a public or private school system near you and offer to help in a garden, help in the kitchen, and help in the classrooms. These kids deserve our support. You can make a difference, if you care about the health of a nation and a generation!

Dr. Oz and Rocco DiSpirito: Move Over Black Bean Brownies – Come to the Dinner Party

June 24th, 2011

Dr. Oz repeated his episode where he had Rocco DiSpirito present his recipe for his Black Bean Brownies.

Well, that’s a healthy alternative to some Brownie recipes, but it’s certainly not the healthiest one that I have used! It’s important to remember that you can use organic ingredients and even gluten-free ingredients which add fiber, nutrients, and flavor to the average Brownie recipe.

Dr. Oz and Rocco’s Black Bean Brownie Recipe

Rocco is doing you a real injustice with this recipe! He should never use canned beans, he should not be using any egg substitute, neither should he be using whole wheat flour. If you want to improve on that recipe with superior ingredients, then go to this Gluten-Free website and then over to the Frontier website to find them:

Frontier Natural Products Co-op – Your Source for Organic and Natural Products

Gluten-Free Foods

Rocco DiSpirito has been busy lately designing a new series on BravoTV. He is putting on a quasi-contest between two people who prepare food for a Dinner Party. The best person who delivers on the atmosphere, the menu, and the unique tastes of the Surprise Guest wins some money.

The first episode was a sham in my opinion. The REAL chef made better food than the teacher at a high school who bungled several of his dishes and his approach to the Dinner Party for Padma Lakshmi. Chef King should have won the competition with his slippers, his Vespa, and his spices. The school teacher did not put enough mustard in his sausage dish, did not deliver on the spices, and did not provide a decent dessert. The gimmick of a tiny blackboard and silly question about “What Would You Be?” when you had a room full of successful professionals left me cold and mystified at how Rocco could possibly think that Joel did the better job. I doubt that I will watch another episode after this first fiasco.

I have had my own share of Dinner Parties, owned and operated a Destination Resort, and prepared the menu and the food at our Natural Foods Restaurant. I know what it takes to deliver on the goods! Chef King did…and teacher Joel did not. So what is going on in Rocco’s head? Maybe it’s all that processed food he’s been eating all of these years… At least Padma is more oriented toward a natural approach. Both of them have been on the Food Network and in other areas of the Food Service world, but they have yet to earn their stripes in my world!

Dr. Oz and the Power of the Pelvis: Dispell the Fear From Pelvic Floor Prolapse

June 23rd, 2011

This episode was one that I had missed when it was originally aired, but Dr. Oz has a timeless message for women who are flabbergasted when parts of their anatomy begin to emerge from their vaginal area. No wonder there is some fear when it happens, because very few talk about this topic.

Several female physicians tackled the subject with Dr. Oz and presented the things to watch for as well as what to do when it happens. This knowledge will dispell the fear that accompanies the experience of prolapse.

Dr. Oz felt that there was some degree of shame attached to this medical condition, but I feel that is more a matter of fear and apprehension. Most women don’t even know that this can happen.

Dr. Oz and the Pelvic Prolapse Issue

Usually, it’s the bladder, the uterus, or the bowel that is prolapsed and comes out through the vaginal opening. The organ can be gently pushed back inside with the fingers. The medical experts suggested that a person not panic, but set up an appointment with their gynecologist or health care provider to determine the best course of treatment which can include non-invasive or surgical procedures.

In my area of expertise, there are bio-energetic reasons for a prolapsed organ. The chi ‘sinks’ and must be supported to change the condition of that organ in the body. We traditionally use Chinese Herbal Formulas to accomplish this to restore the Balance of chi. We refer to the cause of a prolapse as ‘the sinking of the Spleen Chi’. When we use herbs, acupuncture, and whole foods to nourish the chi of the Spleen Meridian, we can reverse the weakening and strengthen the chi which in turn strengthens the physical organ in time. Your local acupuncturist may use moxibustion on Du20 in combination with needling of points to remedy the bio-energetic condition.

It is wise to seek health care from both an acupuncturist and your gynecologist when you wonder what’s happening in the case of a prolapse. The Kegel exercises that the expert demonstrated on Dr. Oz can be done daily, too. That’s one way to give power back to the pelvis!

Dr. Oz and the Sugar That He Insists That You Remove From Your Diet

June 22nd, 2011

Dr. Oz repeated the episode that asked you to reduce or eliminate refined sugar from your diet for your health.

He explained that a person should not have more than six extra teaspoons of refined sugar a day in order to protect one’s health from heart disease, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases. Most people get more than six teaspoons in one can of soda pop. That’s one soda pop a day and how many of you can limit yourselves to just one…

It’s hard to monitor all of the hidden sugar in processed foods, so the best idea is to reduce or eliminate processed foods and go back to eating whole foods. You can also change to finding organic soda and foods that contain natural sweeteners, instead of refine white sugar or high fructose corn syrup.

Frontier Natural Products Co-op – Your Source for Organic and Natural Products

If it were up to me, I would shut down the factories that refine corn and sugar cane into this white poisonous substance, but the powers-that-be keep trying to convince you that all sugar is created equal and the body treats it the same. That’s simply not true!

There are literally dozens of alternatives to lousy soda pop and sugar-laden drinks on the market now. But you have to go to the right markets to find them or locate them online. We’ve shared many of our favorites over the years, from China Cola to Jones Soda to Brain Toniq to Ginger Brew.

If you prepare food from scratch for baking or making any dish, then use honey, maple syrup, molasses, date sugar, organic cane sugar, rice syrup, blue agave syrup, stevia, or some other delicious and nutritious natural sweetener. You can find all of these at your local Whole Foods Markets and online at reputable vendors that we have given you in previous posts. You can use the Link above to go to Frontier Foods Coop to find them, too.

The research will continue to reveal that you have to remove refined sugar from your diet, if you are serious about being genuinely healthy and well. Anything less is a compromise…

Dr. Oz and His Worst Critic Gary Taubes: Both Are Right and Both Are Wrong, So How Do You Know For Sure About Your Health

June 21st, 2011

Both Gary Taubes and Dr. Oz made some points about diet that are correct and both of these fellows made points that are incorrect. So how exactly are you expected to trust anyone’s information?

The quick answer is that you simply must be evaluated with EAV equipment. Then you will know in that moment where your body stands and what it needs to bring it back to a state of Balance. There is no other absolute way to find out with any degree of certainty.

That’s one of the reasons why I devoted my career path to working with this technology. This equipment eliminates the human factor of a particular belief system or misconstrued information that may or may not relate to your physical, mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual, or relationship health issues.

Each person is a true individual. No one has EVER tested the same. Everyone that I have ever evaluated needed a different program and no single supplement, diet, protocol, or group of nutritional products, foods, or medications were identified for more than one individual. It simply showed me how unique each one of us truly is. One size does not fit all…

Dr. Oz and Gary disagreed about the fats and carbohydrates in a person’s diet. Taubes was foolish to think that a human being could remain healthy without fresh fruit that supplies vitamin C, rutin, and other nutrients that is hard to get from meats, cheese, or eggs. A strawberry or an apple is not going to cause most of the human population to become fat or produce insulin in imbalanced quantities. I have found that most people fare much better when they eat fruit separately from any other food group. This applies to juice as well.

Dr. Oz and Gary won’t ever meet in the middle and so you are left with having to choose which information is appropriate for you. You can learn to perform muscle testing on yourself and that might just be your best bet, especially if you cannot locate a Lifestyle Therapist near you who has access to EAV equipment for evaluations.

You may have found it curious that Gary did not agree to getting his Truth Test numbers taken by Dr. Oz. He feels that they are irrelevant. It would have either helped him make his point or hurt him, had his numbers been less than ideal. We’ll never know…

These two men tried to make health easier and simpler than it really is in the real world. It is much more than statistics, surgical evidence, research, studies with limitations, opinion, suspicion, or even a matter of one person’s personal experience. Health and wellness is a very intricate and sophisticated process and life-long journey which changes daily for each of us which is more complex than any doctor or scientist or writer will ever be able to explain to you.

Ultimately, you are the one who is responsible for deciding how to manage the care and feeding of your body. You must listen to your own Knowingness and then seek the information from as many sources as necessary until you feel comfortable with the knowledge and the results of your exploration.

Gary eats meat, eggs, and cheese most of the time on a regular basis. But how long will he be able to maintain his health, if he doesn’t eat free-range grass-fed beef and exotic meats, artisan aged cheeses, and free-range eggs? Right…the quality of your food is even more important than the types of food that you are eating. In my experience, people do best when they eat an organic whole foods plant-based diet with variety. But then, there are exceptions to that, too; so it really comes down to being able to evaluating your body at any given moment in time to know with absolute certainty.

TheDoctorsTV and Smoking: New Labels Issued on Cigarettes Designed to Warn You

June 21st, 2011

Maybe you are enticed by the TV or magazine commercials that feature a fun Lifestyle for those who smoke cigarettes, but now you are going to have to get past the visually-stunning new labels that are intended to warn you about the health risks of smoking.

New Cigarette Label article

The first thing that Dr. Travis Stork on TheDoctorsTV will tell you is to quit smoking. He is joined by his fellow co-hosts on the show who offer the same advice. Dr. Drew will tell you that it ages your skin. Dr. Lisa will tell you how it puts your baby at risk during pregnancy. And Dr. Jim will describe how harmful smoking is for our youth.

Now we have a visual image of how cigarettes impact your health. You are going to see graphic images that show cancer, disease, and other health problems associated with smoking these butts.

If you are going to smoke something, then find organic tobacco that is not contaminated with harmful chemicals, flavorings, or filters. I smoke a pipe with organic tobacco and it has certain benefits that unlock brain chemicals for spiritual evolution…much like the ancient shaman did when they wanted to see a vision of where the buffalo herd was for hunting to supply food for the tribe.

Smoking is a habit that is extremely challenging to terminate, but if you need help to quit, then go to a local Acupuncturist and get the treatment that has been proven to be very effective for stopping the cravings, the addictive behavior, and the energy that makes you desire a cigarette. If the Lung meridian has a ‘cold’ condition; then a person will crave a ‘warming’ herb or food or even tobacco. We all strive for Balance, but it has to be done in a healthy way.

Dr. Oz Wins Two Daytime Emmy Awards: Healthy Lifestyles Lead Television Interests Again

June 20th, 2011

If you watched the Daytime Emmy Awards last night on TV, you would have seen Dr. Oz and his production crew go up on stage to accept their two awards.

Dr. Oz was recognized as the top Talk Show Host along with Kelly Ripa. And the Dr. Oz Show won in the category for Talk Show Informative among which were TheDoctorsTV and Dr. Phil. No surprise there…

News Report on the Emmy Award Wins by Dr. Oz

TheDoctorsTV physicians and Jillian did present an award however, so they were in attendance and offering a second opinion dressed in suit and tie, instead of scrubs.

Dr. Oz opened the segment of the show which honored Oprah and Rachel Ray was in the audience smiling with delight while Lady O sent a heart-felt message. I cannot agree with her assessment that she has enlightened audiences, but she has provided entertainment and information while allowing people to wallow in their emotions. I could use a lot more spiritual and wellness subject material, but who knows where she will actually go on her OWN.

Dr. Oz expressed his thoughts about people always being interested in Healers in the community to help provide them with knowledge and care. He sees his role in this capacity. Let’s hope that this coming year is filled with more knowledge, instead of silly game show tactics that are fun without much merit. I don’t have anything against having a good time, but his game show segments are really distracting the audience from gleaning pertinent information about their health. They remember the gimmicks, the props, and the rah-rah atmosphere rather than relevant information that actually impacts their health.

I did appreciate the fact that Dr. Oz acknowledged his wife, Lisa, as he accepted his award. He spoke sweetly and sincerely that she had helped him make his dreams come true.

Dr. Oz and Hypnosis for Weight Loss: The Power of the Mind Exceeds the Power of the Physical Body

June 18th, 2011

Dr. Oz is tackling the subject of programming the Subconscious Mind through the use of Hypnosis on next Monday’s TV show.

Dr. Oz Preview of Monday’s Show about Hypnosis for Weight Loss

His focus will be on the use of hypnosis for weight loss, but this modality have unlimited applications. You or someone you trust who has been trained to clinically use hypnosis to alter behavior can reprogram the Mind.

Paul McKenna: “I Can Make You Thin”

We are not talking about the conscious waking personality. We are talking about the Subconscious Mind. The Subconscious Mind is your real powerhouse and can indeed control the physical body to lose weight, gain weight, change anything… When you program that part of the Mind, you can find change without great effort, without drugs, without exercise, without any other invasive procedure. It works.

Progressive Awareness

You will hear about case histories on Monday during the Dr. Oz show. This should provide enough evidence for those who harbor any doubt. If you do have doubt, then you are not a likely candidate for hypnosis. When you erase the doubt and trust the process, you will find that it works. The power of the Mind is much more powerful than the physical body. In many ways, it the Watcher and Keeper of the body. It can be considered to be the control center which puts a program into effect in one’s daily life.

We will return to discuss any other issues and ideas for healthy weight management once we view the Monday episode.

OK…we watched the episode today and it was more of a ‘walk in the park’ of Visualization, rather than real Hypnosis and reprogramming of the Subconscious Mind. Oh, well, what can you expect from a fifteen minute segment. It’s better for you to go to a real professional locally or get an audio tape from Eldon Taylor.

I could write a book and claim to be able to make you THIN, but it is the work of the conscious personality, healthy Lifestyle choices, and the program given to the Subconscious Mind that does the real work, not the therapist. You are the powerhouse.

I recommend the audio tapes from MindMint at the link above for Progressive Awareness, if you want to begin your journey with your Mind to control your weight and behavior. This is a technique that you can use in the comfort of your own home and then if you want further guidance, contact a local professional who is trained in clinical Hypnosis.

TheDoctorsTV and Iguana Juice Cocktails with Cactus for the Fountain of Youth Drink

June 17th, 2011

This episode of TheDcotorsTV about Iguana Juice made from the Nopales cactus from the Sonoran desert of the American Southwest and Mexico is thought by many doctors to be the equivalent to the Fountain of Youth legend of Ponce De Lion.

It’s not a legend nor a myth that the Nopales Cactus juice can reduce inflammation which slows the aging process and precludes further degeneration. Inflammation is a major health issue for hundreds of thousands of people who suffer from a lot of pain, discomfort, and a variety of symptoms. Inflammation occurs when there is an injury or damage to tissue, so it can either be acute or a chronic condition.

The Iguana Juice Cocktail recipe can be found here:

TheDoctorsTV Iguana Juice Cocktail Recipe and Clip

It’s cute, it tastes good, and you can even add a little tequila or rum when you are so inclined to this concoction.

The Fountain of Youth is a fabled place where the water springs provide renewal, regeneration, and restoration for those who drink from the wells. Many have thought it to be a reference made by explorers who found indigenous people who were exceedingly healthy, strong, and long-lived in the areas they ‘discovered’ or found in their journeys. Some think that Florida was one of those places while others feel that the desert of the Southwest offered an ideal climate, special plants, and water that was rich in minerals that could extend the life and maintain the well-being of the individual who live upon this land.

The Nopales cactus is one of those amazing plants. Since the original episode of the doctors aired many months ago, I have evaluated the TriVita Nopalea and it is excellent. The infomercial and the literature talks about inflammation which will give you more information about this brand of cactus juice.

TriVita Nopalea – Good Source of Nopales Cactus Juice

I might suggest that you replace the spinach with some other green food like spirulina or blue green algae for both nutritional value and taste in the Iguana Juice Cocktail recipe that the doctors have on their website. The pineapple is perfect. Bananas, berries, coconut milk or water, and other healthy ingredients are going to give you as much nutritive value as the spinach for contributing to your own fountain for finding youthfulness in a drink.

If you want to swap out the celery, then you might add an apple, a banana, some blueberries, strawberries, or even avocado for taste and texture to this cocktail. The nutritional value of the celery can be replaced and is not essential. But it is good along with the spinach. You can also use beets and other vegetables to keep this drink interesting. Most people like it sweet, but the savory flavor with veggies is also delicious with a pinch of sea salt. The important ingredient is the Nopales cactus which can be hard to find. We prefer the juice of the Nopales cactus from the TriVita company under the brand name of Nopalea. There are any number of healthy accompaniments to cactus juice like coconut water, apricot juice, papaya juice or fruit, mango, and even milks like almond milk or coconut milk.

In fact, on Dr. Oz today, he recommended Coconut Water as one of the food for health. I would include coconut milk, raw shredded coconut, and foods made with coconut that is organic or personally hand-picked along a pristine beach.
