The Chew: The Dazzling Dizzy 70’s

February 8th, 2012

The Chew crew took the entire hour to explore the contributions of the 1970’s with food, dance, and fashion fun.

We saw the evolution of music with The Bee Gees to Pink Floyd, The Jackson 5 to Sonny and Cher, and cultural evolution appear before our eyes on TV and stage with The Beatles and other great bands.

The Chew and the 1970’s

While our tastes in music changed, so did our food. Michael made Chicken Kiev and Mario made a Monte Cristo sandwich. We used to serve the Monte Cristo at the Saratoga Inn Dining Room along with other refined specialty dishes. It was the norm for us…

Carla prepared a dirt parfait and demonstrated the technique of folding. Daphne is a little too young to remember much about the 70’s, so they opened her eyes with the teabowl and other nostalgia today. Daphne did broil grapefruit halves with ginger root and sugar to jazz up the old favorite fat-buster topped with mint. Clinton whipped up a Beef Stroganoff which is still popular to this day.

Mario and Michael and Carla explained ‘compound butter’ to Daphne for her culinary edification. I would suggest the use of organic butter and organic herbs and spices today in the modern kitchen.

The 1970’s shaped many of us setting trends and enhancing traditions today. Individual creativity and expression ruled this decade and it touched every aspect of our lives including dance and fashion. I remember finding this pair of levi’s that were shades of brown with a print of the forest trees that wowed all of my friends and their parents. I found the basics of a healthy Lifestyle with a return to natural foods, natural fabrics, and natural ways of healing.

It was a profound time and it shaped the world in a way that will never be forgotten or dismissed easily. Our social, cultural, and spiritual evolution was simply a ‘sign of the times’ wherein we had the encouragement and the freedom to grow, explore, and discover beyond any boundaries. It was dazzling, dizzy, and delightful!

Dr. Oz and the Morbidly Obese: Feederism is For the Foolish

February 7th, 2012

I nearly decided NOT to watch this tragic hour!

Two of the four obese women who suffer from the fetish of “Feederism” refused to get help from Dr. Oz and Dr. Keith. They waddled off the stage in an even deeper degree of denial and self-sabotage than when they agreed to appear on the show.

At least two of the morbidly obese women chose to stay and face their fat issues! That’s the first step toward healthy living…

They were joined by four others who had escaped the death trap of
Feederism and their stories showed courage and fortitude.

Instead of looking at ‘worthlessness’, I would have started with the more general psycho-social issues of ‘pain’. From sexual abuse to sibling rivalry to parental abandonment, the fat serves as a ‘buffer zone’ between the past and the pain in their lives.

It’s one thing to clean up one’s past and quite another to begin to live in the ‘Present’ where they must be to truly heal and succeed in reclaiming their lives. If these obese women can get the support and give themselves the gift of self-love now…they will reach their healthy and happy goals.

Dr. Oz Asks For 5 Days to Fight Fat: after That the Real Work Begins

February 6th, 2012

Dr. Oz is beginning to sound more like a used-car salesman these days…

What doctor in their right mind asks the audience for only five days to make major changes in the way they eat and their quest to lose fat?

Dr. Oz Asks For Five Days to Fight Fat

He then went on to sell the women on a combination of supplements and meals to address their area of concern He treats nutritional supplements and foods like drugs and he readily admits he is like a ‘fish out of water’ when it comes to fashion and appearances to hide the fat parts of the body.

This induces shame, guilt, embarrassment, and trickery; where a healthy Lifestyle would offer a long-lasting genuine solution.

The real work of living well every day begins after you give up that fallacy of five day fixes.

At least Dr. Oz had the good sense to invite Scott from the Food Network to evaluate meals from restaurant chains that are somewhat healthier for the average person!

One last thought – if you want the health benefits of cinnamon to work for you, don’t treat it like a daily drug – cook with it!

Dr. Oz Disappoints When He Gives Permission to People to Cheat

February 3rd, 2012

I think some medical board should revoke his license after he gave permission to dieting people to ‘cheat’!

I implore you: Don’t do it!

You are only betraying yourself when you sabotage your goals and objectives. Your body will rebel and you’ll pay a hefty price for the compromise.

Dr. Oz should be scolded and beg forgiveness for this mistake. It’s unprofessional advice and goes against what is intended by ‘first do no harm’.

Dr. Oz Endangers Your Dietary Goals with Permission to Cheat

Give yourself permission to ‘stick to your guns’ with determination, fortitude, and commitment. Remember, no diet should be temporary; but rather a part of a healthy change in your Lifestyle.

Dr. Oz and His Cardiac Surgury OR Warning for Women’s Hearts

February 1st, 2012

Dr. Oz is a cardiac surgeon, first and foremost. It was only after twenty years of seeing serious damage to the hearts and circulatory system of women that he wants to share his hopes for preventing invasive surgical procedures.

He recommends screening tests and Lifestyle changes to prevent the necessity of going under the knife.

Dr. Oz and Women’s Heart Health from the OR

Big Daddy and the Doc tried to build a meal for the heart with one dish, but I prefer to make several dishes to enjoy the entire process of eating a variety of heart-healthy foods. However, it’s fantastic to see Oz bringing some Food Network talent to his stage!

Beans, sweet potatoes, and a few other foods are on his List of suggestions. Stretching daily and other gentle exercises make a difference. He also offers a 28 Day Plan to reduce your risks.

You would be smart to avoid processed foods, unhealthy oils, and excess table salt. Sea Salt, organic produce and whole foods, and whole grains with beans or legumes play a key role in improving heart health.

You really can benefit from spending some time with holistic providers who can guide your nutritional needs, your psychological needs, and your other biological markers that matter in matters of the heart.

A hot sauce with chili peppers and garlic is one of the Oz favorite condiments along with his recommendation of kidney beans and sweet potatoes while including black currant juice. There are many other foods and spices and herbs that are even more powerful.

The more you can accept ‘what is’ and allow others the freedom ‘to be ‘without creating Stress in your Life, when Joy returns you will notice your heart health improving, too.

Eat well, Love well, and know the joy of living…

Dr. Oz and 99 Diet Foods For Your Shopping Cart: Plus Bonus Healthy Items Beyond the Bean Burrito

January 31st, 2012

In most cases I would recommend against buying the stuff that Dr. Oz recommends for diets, because diets simply are not the most viable solution to losing weight and firming up your body.

But today Dr. Oz did have some useful and legitimate suggestions, mostly because he e has a List that requires you to shop in a health food store or a Whole Foods Markets to fine the brands he mentions.

Dr. Oz and 99 Diet Foods for Your Shopping List

He’s giving away 20,000 coupons for free organic bean burritos courtesy of Amy’s. They make many more frozen entrees, so check out their other offerings while picking up your burrito.

Many other brands like Organic Bistro and well-respected companies like Kashi give people more sound choices for incorporating frozen meals into one’s hectic life when you don’t have to time in the kitchen to make it from scratch. But BEWARE…hidden in the Dr. Oz List are unacceptable brands, too.

He would have honored your health had he given you the bonus item of frozen sweet potato fries which can be baked, not fried; rather than french fries which are not really ‘diet foods’. Furthermore, ignore the ramblings of the Hungry Girl, because her pasta dish will never satisfy and will leave you wanting more. Then you’ll cheat or feel deprived while becoming obsessed with calories.

Your Shopping Cart should not be filled with hundreds of processed foods most of the time. Dr. Oz has a daughter, Daphne, who told The Chew audience today that her guilty pleasure is to have one box of a yellow cake mix on hand for emergencies with 99% of her shopping cart is filled with fresh produce. She’s much smarter than her father…

The Chew: Daphne’s Guilty Pleasures

Dr. Oz couldn’t even fathom how to keep parsley fresh by putting the bunch in water. My God, man, your a doctor, not a gardener! Parsley is a living green plant that thrives in water and stays fresher longer. When will physicians figure out that growing your own herbs and foods is the best medicine in the world? Dr. Li also shared the use of limes, lima beans, and other foods that will reduce your risk of breast cancer dramatically.

At any rate, Dr. Oz is making progress by recommending organic brands and whole foods now more than ever. But someone needs to clue him in that canola oil is a big “no-no”. Walnut oil, macadamia nut oil, and toasted sesame seed oil should not be used with any heat whatsoever. Use peanut oil, grapeseed oil, or sunflower seed oil instead for baking, sauteeing, or frying foods.

Whole Foods Markets offer cooking classes, so that’s the place to shop and learn which whole foods belong in your shopping cart for your weight, your taste buds, and your healthy Lifestyle!
