Ice Cream: Palaces and Places to Get the Good Stuff

May 5th, 2012

During these summer months ahead as the heat convinces you that you are in need of a cold ice cream, you have to ask yourself where you can find the healthiest ice cream.

Ice Cream Places On the Road

It’s a cop-out to go into most grocery stores and buy the typical brands that they stock. Too much sugar, artificial ingredients, and freezer burn make them unpalatable to say the least. Your body deserves better!

Specialty ice cream shops and restaurants who make creative desserts will not disappoint you. In fact, you’ll develop an instant appreciation for the ‘good stuff’.

These shops and locations are all over the place, so whether you explore your backyard or travel far and wide, you can discover some fantastic ice cream.

Look for artisanal food people. Look for those who use organic ingredients and make their food from scratch. Look for the chef who goes out of the way to create the best, instead of the usual fare.

With the advent and use of Search Engines like Google and Bing, we now have tools to assist us in our exploration with relative ease. Twitter and Facebook make it simpler to find Food Trucks and establishments that offer us what we want. Don’t settle for less!

Groupon and other companies are also going to be invaluable resources. There are websites devoted to food and specialty items and there’s always the personal review and recommendation.

Dr. Oz On Belly Fat – Sleep Solutions – and Gale Gand’s Goodnight Dessert

May 4th, 2012

Dr. Oz has covered this territory before, but he keeps coming back to it. Millions of people are trying to get rid of Belly Fat and millions more cannot get a good night’s rest.

Belly Fat – 30 days and Dr. Oz thinks he can flatten your tummy with a combination of exercise and changes in your daily routine. He brought out Brett to show some moves that trim the tummies in a month.

Dr. Oz and Belly Fat Plan from Brett

Then he discussed the main reasons why people are not sleeping and gave ideas for each reason.

Finally, Gale Gand and the doctor that can crack an egg made a dessert that helps people go to sleep and the Oz liked it’s taste. The apricot-chamomile infusion was a very good ideas for a good night dessert.

You need to eat it earlier in the evening however, to give your body enough time to digest, metabolize, and direct the nutrients and the calming energy where it must go to work. I like the fact that Gale used agave syrup to sweeten her dessert and that she taught Dr. Oz to use a fresh vanilla bean, instead of vanilla extract which contains alcohol.

Dr. Oz needs to take a class to learn about Essential Oils. He recommended Lavender, but he used a less-effective method of introducing the calming effect of Lavender than diffusing the Essential Oil.

Dr. Oz and His Best Advice Ever: Plus Give-Aways of Products Oz Endorses

May 1st, 2012

Dr. Oz thinks that this is his finest hour and he’s giving away millions of dollars worth of products to prove it. It’s almost an Oprah moment…

Dr. Oz began by talking about reducing wrinkles. He has some medical products and cosmetics that don’t strike me as healthy for these first groups of advertising of products hidden behind the guise of advice.

You know…maybe he would be more accountable, if he had a financial stake in the product. He’s not very picky.

He had a teeth whitening device to give away and most people do not realize that the chemicals can damage delicate tissues in the mouth at the expense for whiter teeth.

At least there is a healthy cheese snack from Whole Foods Markets in the mix.

Whoops!

My local news network decided that Anarchists disrupting a peaceful gathering in Seattle is more newsworthy of coverage on this TV channel. I have no idea what else Dr. Oz is doing!

You will need to go the the Oz website to get more information about how to get these give-aways, if you want them.

Dr. Oz and His Big Give-Away of Products

I am not the kind of person to recommend that you count every step you take during the day, nor do I suggest that you use questionable products that do not appear to be as healthy as much as they might be free. That reminds me of what tactics grocery stores use to draw in their customers to buy some things they do not want or need…

The Chew and Favorite Recipes with a Twist and a Tweek

May 1st, 2012

Mario tweeked his son’s recipe for Sloppy Joes with some spice and some fresh condiment to jazz up Leo’s version to give the audience an idea of ways to vary their new favorite dishes.

Michael dressed up his Hungarian Goulash to make it more American for viewers with crisp red peppers and spicy sausage perfectly browned in five minutes. He gets a lot of flack from his cohorts, but he smiles and laughs his ways through their antagonizing comments. I would have saved the fresh basil to add at the very last fragrant minute before serving, but Daphne got lost in her role of basil caretaker.

Daphne shined with her twist and Carla sparkled with her recipe almost as much as Clinton carried the laughter into his craft corner and glass jars of dirt and dish. A liquid smoothie or a frozen pop satisfies the sweet and healthy tooth. While I feel that most people forget to include water with their psyllium husks which leaves them dehydrated and with digestive upset, Daphne does a decent job of giving a healthy twist to a popcycle. There is plenty of fiber in the fruit to suffice, so I would leave out the husks.

The Chew and Favorite Recipes Twists and Turns

It’s the sign of a confident and capable cook to vary the dish and the recipe to reflect seasonal ingredients, the needs of the moment, and variations on a theme this way. In my restaurant, I could make an identical dish or I could customize it to suit any special request. I could cook in the present moment and that makes food good and great!

Dr. Oz and Metabolic Boosters Sparklers Like Fireworks and Rocketfuel

April 30th, 2012

Dr. Oz feels that you need something akin to rocket fuel and fireworks to get your metabolism going again.

Are you THAT burned out or is it just his audience?

I think that the people who seek a doctor’s opinion are sick and tired while the rest of us are busy holding up the fort and teaching others how to maintain Wellness.

Dr. Oz and Metabolic Boosters

Your body when balanced and nourished produces sufficient resources of energy to sustain you by its very nature and design. The more you learn about the majestic design of the human body, the more you will appreciate the infinite knowledge that created this form. Doctors know only a small portion of this sacred knowledge, enough to keep the mechanical part of the body operating… When you can ‘see’ the energy fields and movement in and around the human body; then you will have attained another level of awareness far beyond that of a physician.

Dr. oz has a lot of quick fixes for stimulating metabolic processes. Not all of them are intelligent nor are they practical. I could not and would not be dropping so much hot sauce into my tomato juice or on my popcorn without fearing for the lining of the digestive system. He’s crazy! He has no business putting ice chips and branches of mint leaves into red wine. He ruined it.

Drink water when you are thirsty, instead of drowning yourself in too many bottles a day with a silly use of rubberbands. Use your innate intelligence!

He brought Rocco on stage to share the secrets of restaurants which use French cooking techniques to heighten food preparation. The excess of butter, sauce, fats, and other tricks do not lend themselves to healthy eating when New York establishments are competing for business, instead if focusing on the quality of the food. There’s this ‘fine line’ in the sand and too many chefs cross the line. Rocco did…and now he’s learning to do things differently.

Some seemingly healthy items cross that line, too. Dr. Oz loses sight of that line too often. He needs a reminder about the use of amino acids, nutritional supplements, and many foods. Did you see the horrific way he treated the sliced apples when he dumped a ton of cinnamon on them with a dusting that choked him?

First of all, you don’t need to slice the apple until it is actually time to eat it. This prevents oxidation and browning. He should have taken the container with a mixture of lemon juice and cinnamon powder to work with him and blended it with the apple with more finesse. Some honey would have helped to adhere the juice and cinnamon on the surface of each slice of apple and it would taste better that way.

At least Dr. Oz invited a guest to share a few good snacks like quinoa and chia seeds. Pepitas are pumpkin seeds, not squash seeds. Dr. Oz likes pine nuts, but he doesn’t know how to use them. He showed off a few spirulina products and that was a ‘good thing’ for a change.

He is trying…it’s not all that bad. He is just such a neophyte! It makes me feel compelled to discuss these things with you. Caution you about blasting your body into no man’s land with fireworks and rocketfuel gimmicks that do more harm than good.

A Peek Into Mario’s Home Kitchen: Food and Family Room for Living Well

April 30th, 2012

The Chew is fun, informative, and makes food accessible…

Today Mario Batali allowed us to peek into his home kitchen where he builds his family ties with people and food for well-being.

It was quaint, it was more than sufficient, it was welcoming.

I have to say that the information and the recipes coming to The Chew every day is a sign of the times. Mario and other chefs are as popular as movie stars and athletes. They are the icons for the future for young people. They are an indicator that we have been moving toward a society that sees the value of nourishing one another instead of competing for resources.

Food and family and community! This sustains what it is to be ‘human’ in a good way.

The Chew and the Home Kitchen

Mario, Michael Symon, Carla, and chefs or cooks from many walks of Life are changing the face of the nation. Good Morning America and The Today Show bring food segments on almost every day. Schools, restaurants, grocers, growers, and other vital community groups are spending more time to feature local, sustainable sources of food as the ‘hub in the wheel’ that keeps the local economies strong.

The home kitchen is the key to it all and the circle widens from there to touch all of us. You have an opportunity to make your kitchen into a sanctuary where you and your family thrive and prosper.

Today is one of those days…

April 29th, 2012

It is just ‘one of those days’ when you want to sit it out and take a breather.

I am grabbing a coffee and just finished my organic salad with feta, onion, and a balsamic reduction on baby field greens.

It’s a day to relax and gather one’s vital energy for another busy week.

Sometimes a ‘day off’ is called for and appreciated for what it is. We’re allowed a day when it suits the needs of the moment.

Have a restful and rejuvenating day in your way!

Energy Drinks and Doctors Orders: Stimulate Those Adrenals

April 28th, 2012

On both TV shows – Dr. Oz and TheDoctorsTV – the physicians talked about ‘energy drinks’ this last week.

Dr. Oz and Energy Drinks

It is prevalent in our culture that is constantly ‘on the go’ to indulge in energy drinks and stimulants. The commercials for 5 hour buzzes are everywhere.

The doctors are offering advice at the end of their hours to drink energy drinks wisely…not all are created equally.

It’s preferable to balance the adrenals through nourishment and replenishment.

Most energy drinks use ingredients that stimulate the adrenal glands to boost energy levels artificially which cripples the endocrine system over time.

If you happen to find Brain Toniq in your store – that’s better than other kinds.
