Dr. Oz and Supplements for Bellies and Other Body Parts

May 25th, 2012

Dr. Oz gets carried away with recommending too many supplements and products. If you were to take everything he describes, you would be gulping down pills every ten minutes of the day!

This is unreasonable!

It is far better to get the nutrients from your food. The miso, sauerkraut, and whole grain dishes are preferable to pills, powders, and tablets. A plant-based whole foods diet is going to provide more nutrients than all of these supplements and your body already knows how to absorb and assimilate food.

If you had to pick only one supplement from the many that Oz wants you to take, it would be DHEA – not just the 7-keto. You would only use that for four months and then give your body a chance to manufacture the master hormone on its own or else run the risk of your body relying upon an external source. That would be stupid and tragic!

In many cases, you might take as product for one purpose and it will throw another system out of balance. Evening Primrose Oil can do that as can calcium supplements… You have to really KNOW your body and the substances that you put into it.

Calcium Can Raise Risks

Dr. Oz told people to use primrose oil for wrinkles, but didn’t explain the effect on the reproductive system or cycle. There are better choices for skin tonification when menstrual cycles are altered by this powerful oil.

The biotin suggestion for nails forgets that it is essential to take all the B complex vitamins together, instead of one or to to keep from creating an imbalance…they work in unison. Whole grains does this for you.

Likewise, taking L-Carnosine alone is going to throw amino acids out of balance over time. That’s the last thing you want to do for your health! If you feel it is important to boost metabolism with Carnosine; then take Vital 18 which contains all the essential amino acids for good measure.

If those women with brittle nails and hair really want to change, they need more minerals than vitamins like zinc, silicon, and trace minerals. These minerals can be derived from vegetables, seaweed, and other whole foods.

Caraway seeds in foods is reasonable, but not chewing a spoonful of seeds…that’s irrational. Yogurt, miso, sauerkraut, and fermented vegetables will do more to reduce bloating and improve digestion than caraway seeds alone. They are fine in moderation in real food, but not meant to be chewed separately. Saffron gets the same billing…use it in your food dishes, instead of a supplement.

Dr. Oz and Wrinkle Fix

You have to watch these doctors who make the mistake of treating herbs like drugs! Dr. Oz is a real offender far too often. He’s at it again for Bellies:

Dr. Oz and Summer Teas for Boosting Metabolism and Weight Loss

May 24th, 2012

In the doctor’s effort to get women’s bodirs ready for summer and the swimsuit, he talked about the power of Tea today.

He brewed up four different combinations of tea, fruit, and spices. The audience member gave each of them the taste test and she preferred the Green Tea with fresh Ginger Root. We would normally add Lemon Juice to that, too, to make it both refreshing and healthful.

Dr. Oz and Summer Tea

She tried the White Tea with fresh slices of Pears, the Oolong Tea with Cinnamon sticks, and the Yerba Mate Tea with grapefruit segments.

Generation Tea

Believe it or not, Doctor Oz is trying to re-invent the wheel. Teas have been combined with delightful ingredients for as long as anyone can remember. Although, that pitcher with the inner glass tube to separate the solids is a good tool in the brewing process.

Teas Etc

Most specialty tea companies will offer some fantastic custom blends! This takes care of one step in the art of making a memorable and healthy cup of Tea.

Art of Tea

I do not recommend iced drinks, but rather those served at room temperature. If you must, make an ice cube of juice or herbal tea to use. You shock the body with beverages or foods that are too hot or too cold.

Tea for tea’s sake is reason enough to drink it. It is a healthy beverage when taken without sugar or cream.

Tea will have an effect on the body’s metabolism, but it is not to be confused as a weight loss product.

Savor summer tea for the health of it!

Dr. Oz Names the Transformation Nation Winner

May 23rd, 2012

Everyone voted and the results are in: The winner is Coach Lamb!

He said that it was important to him that he be a role model for those he coaches, let’s hope that makes a difference to many of our youth.

We’ll see what he does with his $1 million dollar prize.

I would have given the award to Mercedes. She is going to coach people in health and wellness.

Actually all of the participants were winners. Their lives changed, they altered their Lifestyles, and they found the motivation to become healthier.

It should not take a contest to instill motivation in anyone, but it does work.

Here are a few of the recipes that TN participants used to transform their figures:

Dr. Oz Interviews Paula Abdul: Chronic Pain and Green Drinks

May 22nd, 2012

Paula hasn’t talked about her struggle with chronic pain in public much at all; but she gave Dr. Oz an earful today.

She has found a lot of relief as long as she sticks to her plant-based alkaline diet, drinks a green drink, and keeps inflammation from getting the better of her.

She found out the hard way that pain is not easy to manage with drugs. Her diet has done the most for alleviating the pain.

She endorses a woman’s supplements for her skin; but she disclosed her relationship with the company. She got relief first.

May 20th, 2012

Have you seen the commercial with Kermit the frog from Sesame Street eating his green pistachios?

It’s a cute reminder that not that many things are that green!

Dr. Oz and Food Network Chefs: Healthy Food For Weight Management

May 18th, 2012

I am so very glad to see the chefs on the Food Network and their colleagues bring healthier food to the Dr. Oz audience.

This will do more for his audience in terms of learning life-long skills in weight management than all of the other gimmicks and quick fixes he pulls out of his hat and black bag.

Dr. Oz and Chefs on Healthy Recipes for Weight Loss

From steak tacos to a chicken parm sandwich, from grilling barbeque chicken to shrimp scampi and vegetarian chili, these chefs are shaving off the calories from fats, sugar, and processed ingredients found in fast food or frozen meals. They are showing the audience just how easy it can be to make fresh food.

Whether chefs at their own restaurants, judges on Iron Chef America, Food network chefs, or Top chefs; these men and women have gained a reputation for good food that is healthy without sacrificing flavor or texture, in fact making the food more delicious.

The Meal Ambush shows that anyone can change the choices they make to eat healthier food. Chefs had to learn…so can you.

Eat well to be well…

Dr. Oz on the Weird and Worrisome Conditions

May 17th, 2012

Many people think they are the only ones in the world who have a particular condition like inverted nipples or sleeping with your eyes open. Dr. Oz discussed these weird, uncommon, and worrisome conditions on his show today.

A lot of these things are normal and not problematic. Some of these conditions are due to genetic traits passed on through generations, and some are issues that just are that frequently discussed by the public or the medical community until they are personal.with a patient’s presentation.

Dr. Oz and Weird Conditions

It could be that millions of people share the complaint that you believe to be weird and rare. There are those who compose stats about these things, but you can learn more by consulting your healthcare professional.

Weird doesn’t always equate to needing to be worried about any condition. Someone somewhere knows something about it. You may need to employ the services of a detective in addition to a doctor to find out.

Dr. Oz and Girl’s Health: What’s Happening Now?

May 16th, 2012

I didn’t notice any actual girls during this hour, but women who listen to the guy doctor seemed OK with the age discrepancy.

For some odd reason, he is bringing clothing and fashion into the picture to hide the extra pounds and bulges.

Dr. Oz and Girl’s Health

He keeps pushing the usual stuff and rotates among episodes… Insufficient for lasting change!

I don’t know which protein snack bars Oz is eating, but he needs to shop for the good ones at Whole Foods Markets, not the regular grocery store.

What irked me was his perception about gluten-free foods.

Oz discussed the side of the trend toward gluten-free alternatives that is corrupted by food companies cashing in on the trend, instead of laying the foundation for the health issues. That’s where his mind wanders…

He did manage to display four options to wheat: amaranth, quinoa, teff, and buckwheat. He left me with the impression that he doesn’t know much about these, except they are mentioned in the general discussion about gluten sensitivity.

One of these days, he will have chefs prepare a few whole grain and seed dishes as examples. With little white arrows on cereal boxes and references to whole grain bread, people are very confused. Macrobiotic cooks and peasant cuisines are far more advanced than Dr. Oz in their knowledge of whole grains.

I can understand why oz cannot recommend juice when his concept of juice comes from a glass bottle or frozen concentrate. He needs to bring an expert in juicing on the show to help his audience and for him to learn about ‘real’ juicing. Martha knows enough to share important information about juicing, so why doesn’t Oz?

Dr. Oz and Secrets to Youthful Health: Defy Your Age

May 15th, 2012

Sometimes you just have to shake your head and allow some of these people to believe that they know why the things that they do work. The ladies look younger and yet they don’t completely understand how.

The green drink made on stage today contained pineapple, spinach, coconut water, lemon juice, ginger, and wheatgrass cubes. The woman was asked by Oz about the value of wheatgrass. She mistakenly said it was to cleanse and purify, but in reality the nutrients build the blood and fortify instead. The lemon detoxes to some extent, but the green drink ingredients are primarily going to be used by the body to build blood and deliver nutrients to cells.

Zucchini does not make a pasta, it might resemble noodles when you julienne into thin strips; but describing vegetable strands as a pasta is a mistake. Turmeric and mustard seed are warming, but not ‘fire-starters’. Chile varies wildly in terms of heat and thermogenic effect. Cooks know that the heat is found in the membranes and seeds.

Does this sound like nit-picking to you? Well, you do benefit from knowing why and how things work.

Dr. Oz and Secrets of Youth

These are not quite secrets, but many of these ideas do have merit. Some may also be inaccurate to some extent… Be mindful.

The body must be nourished to regenerate and slow or reverse aging. Other Lifestyle factors from smoking to alcohol consumption all play a role. It’s a lot bigger than Oz suggests.

Dr. Drew and His New Book: 7 Days to a Better Body

May 15th, 2012

I find it compelling that a cosmetic surgeon in practice for more than 30 years would choose to write a book about natural methods for a better body in seven days.

Imagine how many times he’s been asked to nip this and tuck that, because people didn’t take good care of themselves with a healthy Lifestyle.

TheDoctorsTV and Dr. Drew’s New Book

I would normally tell you that expecting dramatic changes in your body in a mere seven days is impractical and unreasonable. There are certainly possibilities for improvement in one week, but don’t anticipate miracles.

It took you a LOT longer than seven days to age, wrinkle, bulge, and all the other things that bodies in states of disrepair do which shows up over years. You should give yourself the rational gift of logic that it will take awhile to rejuvenate the body without the benefit of the scalpel and the liposuction.

It is preferable to live a a healthy Lifestyle your entire Life instead of remedial work later on. but when you have not, then books like Dr. Drew’s are very helpful.

He recognizes the value of spirulina and grapefruit and olive oil among many other natural substances that work to supply the nutrients lacking to the body.

Good for you, Dr. Drew, for putting this information together to be of service to those who value a better body!
