Dr. Oz said it himself today, the real solution is a healthy Lifestyle. Not only for Sleep Disorders and Disordered Sleep, but also for people who diet, people who pop pimples, and people trying to understand how their bodies work…even yellow discoloration in one’s sclera!
I have always loved to sleep. I had the benefit in my early years of enjoying my mother sitting with me as she tucked me in, saying a short prayer, and telling me how much she loved me; gently talking with her soothing voice until I drifted off to sleep. I felt safe, I felt comfortable, I felt that the day had been well-lived and I knew that I was loved. It was easy to fall asleep and dreams wonderful dreams with a great mom like mine.
Occasionally my father would tuck me in, but he didn’t possess the same degree of comfortability; although he did share his thoughts about the day and tease me with things that we could do the next day, like playing golf or going skiing with him. I knew that I needed a good night’s sleep, if I was going to be filled with the energy for eighteen holes or six hours on the slopes!
I was not given sweet snacks before bedtime, nor soda pop, nor milk…in fact I rarely drank anything after an early dinner unless we popped popcorn for a movie. My bladder was fine until the morning and my endocrine system was in balance, allowing my brain to release melatonin and nurture me into a deep sleep…deep and restful.

One other good tip we want to bring to your attention is to buy a sleep mask that gets rid of all the light from street lights, night lights, and every other distraction in your bedroom. At least he was honest with the mother and daughter who have been changing their food meal plans to lose weight and regain some healthy Lifestyle patterns. I was actually rather proud of Dr. Oz when he told them that what they needed for long-term success was a healthy Lifestyle that was sustainable. That’s the truth!
When you feed the body with whole foods and nutrients, you can’t be skimping on breakfast or lunch or snacks. It shocked me that the daughter did not eat breakfast. My God, what a basic necessity for real health. We like our fresh organic fruit or Smoothies, but we never turn down a chance to begin our day with some whole grains and soymilk. Even some Granola or some Pulse is going to take you far into your day in a healthy and sustainable way!
Instead of lunch with a bunch of bread for a sandwich, use a teff tortilla or some cabbage leaves to house your tuna salad, egg salad, tofu salad, or shrimp salad! Even a whole grain cracker is preferable to two slices of bread…with scoops of your favorite spread like a Nut Butter, Hummus, or Tahini with a leaf of basil or any field greens to add texture and crunch. If you love peanut butter or other Nut Butters; then slice a few carrots and celery and other veggies and slather them with Nut Butter bravely!
Forget those soda crackers that are loaded with calories, white flour, and salt. They are a big ‘no-no’. Drink your veggies for lunch, too, with a great carrot juice Smoothie with ginger, apple, beets, and celery. That young teen was in need of some cooking and juicing classes with her mom! The principal that is coaching them to shop wisely also needs to take them into the kitchen for classes in food preparation for lasting changes and food that actually tastes great, instead of OK or not bad. Let’s get real and get into food preparation for a truly sustainable healthy Lifestyle!
Salmon and other fish dishes need to be seasoned properly, so that these mothers and daughters will enjoy fish for once. Herbs, spices, and seasoning mixes offer a taste sensation that will make it much easier to make the necessary changes in their dietary choices of healthy foods. Pesto, tapenades, marinades, and healthy sauces will make those salmon dishes delightful and she will love fish with flavor. Fresh herbs and healthy oils along with organic nuts will supply these two with the EFAs that they need to regulate their fatty metabolism and turn their fat into useful calories. Then perhaps they will stick with a new routine and make it a genuine Lifestyle change for the rest of their lives.
As a side note, for Dr. Oz who didn’t know what to tell the woman who asked about her sister’s eye being yellow…when we see yellowing in the sclera, we take a deeper look into the Lung and Large Intestine meridians and their relative imbalances in addition to toxins in the body.
