Dr. Oz agreed with the young gentleman who had found some easy ways to cut down on calories and add healthier foods to his diet while losing weight and shrinking his waistline.

The chicken is a good choice as is turkey and then there’s ostrich meat! It is a healthy alternative and it tastes great, too. Don’t underestimate the flavor of buffalo and other exotic healthy meats!

There are several companies who are making healthy ketchup and mustard. There are real pickles that are much better for you than the relish at the fast food places. There are several types of organic and natural mayonnaise and aoli that are better than the best. You will find that you don’t have to compromise taste at all!

Roasted garlic cloves made a great spread with sea salt. Peppers in red, orange, yellow and green are delicious and healthy choices in place of tomatoes. Dried tomatoes in olive oil will still give you the tomato flavor while providing some chew instead of smoosh.

You must be aware that there are more designer mustards on the market than hot sauces! There are some delicious organic grainy mustards that taste fabulous. Horseradish, sauerkraut, wasabi, and BBQ sauce always suit my buds when I am looking a some zip and pizazz. Teriyaki sauce features well on Burgers whether they are made with beef, turkey, chicken, or tempeh. Garden Burgers come in an assortment of flavors and are a good alternative to meat. We make our own veggie burgers and throw on some slices of avocado, sour cream, and grilled onions to make us smile.

One of our best alternatives to salt is gomasio which is made from toasted sesame seeds and sea salt. We add some nori flakes or some garlic powder and Voila!…healthy magic in the making on burgers, sandwiches, and any type of wrap.

Speaking of wraps, you can put any kind of healthy meat with greens and layer in soy cheese or an aged cheese or feta…roll it up and slice it in two. Wraps are very popular, especially when you pour on some spicy salad dressing or spice mixture to make the flavor pop.

Tofutti makes an alternative to sour cream that tastes like the real thing and yet is healthier for you than dairy from questionable sources which can contain synthetic hormones and other agri-chemicals. There are new spreads that are made from nuts and seeds that will give you more nutrients and still keep your sandwich or taco from falling apart. Nut butters from almonds, cashews, and other types will astound you now that creative minds are experimenting with mass distribution at Whole Foods and local Food Co-ops. We love babaganoush and hummus for our sandwiches. There is a tofu spread that resembles egg salad that most people will find to be more than edible when compared to those edible eggs!
