Dr. Oz and Andrew Weil: Alternative Health Urges, Purges, and Surges for Optimal Wellness with the Green Monster Drink

The first new episode of this season on Dr. Oz featured our old buddy, Dr. Andrew Weil who shared many of his usual ideas about Alternative Health and Wellness.

It was fairly obvious to give credit to Olive Oil as a healthy oil, yet Andrew and Oz get a thumbs-up for mentioning toasted sesame oil which we have used for fifty years. The restaurant that has developed recipes using Andrew’s approach shared his infamous Green Monster Drink which got mixed reviews in taste and texture. The woman who stood between our two doctors getting their ‘green’ groove on didn’t appear to like either the Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero) Tea nor the Green Monster Smoothie. She was most likely expecting or at least hoping for something sweet. The apple and carrot juice in the Green Monster helps to make the blend more palatable, but not nearly enough for the beginner’s palate.

If you want to get off to a good start with this Tea or the Green Drink with a smile; then add either honey or stevia or blue agave syrup to suit your taste until you can reduce the sweetness to nothing. Although, the honey will bio-energetically facilitate the movement of the Yin Chi of the Ginseng into the Spleen Meridian to build the blood (xue) and other body fluids. You can also add lemon juice to the Tea to make it seem a little more familiar to your typical expectations of tea tastes.

I chose not to eat at Andrew’s restaurant in Phoenix when I lived in Scottsdale, because they didn’t bother to use all organic produce and whole foods. This comprised the quality of their food in my opinion, but at least they are making an effort to change and improve typical restaurant fare.

I was glad to see that the two doctors agreed that the spices and herbs deserved a regular spot in the food you eat. Ginger Root, garlic, cinnamon, and turmeric sat on the demo table with quinoa and other whole foods. The weird demo was the nutritional supplements that were shown in a giant martini glass which gave the wrong impression. I was relieved to finally hear Dr. Oz endorse Co-enzyme Q 10, but the explanation from both Andrew and Oz was insufficient to give you the benefits of this supplement. Andrew made it sound like you had to be old, decrepit, and losing all your faculties to obtain value from its use. I must tell you this: Oz and Andrew didn’t give you the best idea about how much vitamin C to take regularly. Your body generally can absorb and utilize about 60 mg. an hour and excretes the rest. We would suggest that Dr. Bernard Jensen is much more qualified and deserving of this title than Andrew. Think about it…

I kept waiting for the substance of the discussion about Alternative Medicine. It is far more than a handful of supplements, four spices and herbs, a couple of whole foods and Ginseng Tea. There was a brief mention of Tai Chi and Yoga, but that was it. This topic is much more comprehensive and extensive than the two doctors seem to grasp when sharing their expertise with the audience. They only scratched the surface…
