Distracted Drivers: The Road at Risk
I was listening to some of the stories about ‘distracted driving’ on TheDoctorsTV show this morning and it occurred to me that my generation would rarely have made ‘attention’ to driving such a weighted issue in our day.
We didn’t need to be on the phone texting all the time, we didn’t need to rush here and there to make it through a busy schedule for the day. We paced our existence in a more balanced and natural way.
We were more conscious drivers. We took being on the road more seriously. We were responsible. This last three generations have not lived up to these standards and put everyone on the road at risk.
TheDoctorsTV and Distracted Driving
The doctors pointed out what long-term medical consequences face people who are injured in car accidents. Teens should be exposed to these outcomes before being allowed to drive, to know why the rules of the road apply to one and all. They should be taken to the sight of an accident and observe what death, destruction, injury, and harm really are… It needs to sink in before they get behind the wheel.
If they get introduced to the challenges of driving while under the influence of alcohol, recreational drugs, pharmaceutical drugs, and even too many energy drinks, that can alter the incidence of accidents and change behavioral choices. Young people need more training about driving in extreme weather conditions and in road etiquette prior to having a set of keys in their hands.
You can learn more about the medical risks at TheDoctorsTV, but there’s no substitute for local education, training, and driving preparation. If you see a teen texting in the car, take a moment to talk about this subject like they did on “Glee”. Furthermore, no driver should own a device unless they are committed to putting it away while driving. Nothing is as important as a safe ride that reaches the destination and there’s nothing that cannot wait! No excuses.
No eating in the car. No drinking in the car. No reason to take your eyes off the road in front of you. No reason not to stop and rest when tired. Basics are basics for obvious reasons! Then there are the absurd things like applying make-up, changing clothes, having sex, doing business deals on the phone, and any other ridiculous activity that distracts a driver.
