Dr. Oz Thinks that Red Yeast Rice Extract is a Natural Pharmaceutical!
What’s in a name or a label which a doctor places on a nutritional supplement that defies all logic?
Dr. Oz on Red Yeast Rice Extract
Dr. Oz describes red yeast rice extract as a natural pharmaceutical on his website. There is no such thing!
Either a substance is labeled to be a drug or a nutrient, not both. This is a grievous error on his part. A drug may be derived from a natural plant, but the properties are changed in the process.
Many natural substances are altered and are turned into drugs, but they are no longer identical. It betrays common sense and professional training to call this extract a drug. It IS a nutritional supplement.
Doctors and medical personnel need to draw that fine line in the sand. They need to get the facts straight and present accurate information to the public.
The confused doctor was trying to give his audience some natural options for reducing cholesterol. He provided foods like okra, beans, and barley which are rich in fiber. he mentions plant-based diets that lessen the frequency of the consumption of animal products. He even identifies oyster mushrooms, although he is unsure whether to eat them raw or cook them. The List goes on with soy foods and nuts.
It was great to see Dr. Oz invite Alex from the Food Network to prepare a vegetable pot pie. She can cook! Everyone was making pot pies this week. Michael Symon on The Chew whipped up a delectable pot pie with Mario helping with the prep work. Martha made a pot pie and there was another episode on the FoodChannel that featured a pot pie. Pot Pies are a good way to eat a variety of vegetables in one dish.
The regulation of fatty metabolism in the body is best managed with whole foods, not statin drugs. Nutritional supplements come in second place to whole foods. With any luck at all, Dr. oz will know the difference in the future.
