Dr. Oz and Chia Seeds – Another Look
There are so many people who are actually interested in these incredible little seeds, so I thought that it would be a good time for the next day or two to revisit the world of Chia Seeds.
My first introduction to these tiny delights was when I was first learning about nutrition while a Manager at Wyoming Natural Foods with Billie who owned two stores in town. We carried a few types of seeds and the chia seeds were among the most unique due to their powerful nutrient density and protein profile.
I had read that South American civilizations had used Chia Seeds for long distance runs and long travel for hunting or trade for hundreds of years, chewing them carefully and completely as they walked for tens of miles each day. The protein provided by the seeds gave these people the energy and resilience to carry on for miles and miles without stopping to rest or eat a full meal. The fantastic sustenance contained in the tiny seeds would give all that was needed for an entire trip to their destination with a light weight solution to the age-old problem of taking nourishment on the trail with you without bogging you down with enormous weight and volume.
The Chia Seeds impressed me with their history and their rugged durability. Chewing these tiny morsels demanded time and attention which in turn gave the chewee the slow release of nutrients to supply the storehouse of caloric energy that sustained them as they moved across long distances.
I found that a blender made my job much easier than chewing for hours and the smoothies and drinks took on a characteristic color the hue of the seeds even without using too many at one time.
I experimented with the Chia Seeds adding them to breads and even topping rolls and biscuits with these seeds for texture and nutritive value.
I even substituted the seeds for texture on the bottom crust of my pizza dough when baking it in the oven to prevent sticking and giving it more pizazz.
Tomorrow I will continue to elaborate on the various aspects of Chia Seeds that are not well known in most circles. There’s a lot to discuss and a lot of territory to cover.
Sweet Chia Dreams!
