Dr. Oz Finally Has an Expert That Agrees with Me on Whole Grains and Cereals, Obesity as Abuse by Parents, and the Food in the School System

It finally happened. I knew it would eventually. Dr. Oz had an expert on his show today that agrees with me about the deceptive advertising of cereal companies who make the claim that their cereals are ‘whole grain’.

We all know that cereals come from whole grains…that’s a fact. But once the whole grain is milled to become a cereal, it is NO LONGER a whole grain.

Most cereals are made from flour. They gum up the digestive system and do not offer the same health benefits that whole grains provide people. So let’s get real and stop falling prey to advertising claims that are false and misleading!

You want fiber? You want the health benefits from whole grains? Guess what? You have to eat whole grains. Is that so hard to fathom?

Cereals are not going to give you as much nutrition as whole grains. End of story! That cannot be debated… I hope that you get that through your head and realize that the cereal companies are trying to dupe you into believing otherwise with their slick ad campaigns. They have compromised whole grains to turn them into cereals. They are not the same. Your body digests them differently. Get it?

Parents cannot buy a box of Cheerios and add some cow’s milk and put that in front of their child and think that they have provided them with a healthy breakfast. That’s a false assumption! You need an education about nutrition. You also need a cooking lesson about how to prepare whole grains, beans, legumes, eggs, and other whole foods for the first meal of the day. You will be a good parent when you do this much for your children.

Dr. Oz wanted to discuss whether or not parents are abusing their children when they feed them foods which result in obesity for their child. My answer is: yes. It is an abuse of the trust that your child places in you as a parent to provide the highest quality of food available to your family members. They can’t go out and shop themselves until they are older. They can’t go out and grow their own whole grains. They rely upon their parents to supply healthy food. So parents are responsible for the food that is brought into the home. As a parent, you are contributing to the health or the detriment of your child’s health with every food purchase you make. It’s your duty as a parent to provide healthy food for your child.

It is not only neglect, but it is abuse. If you knowingly feed your child processed foods and substances that are known to cause cancer, degenerative disease, obesity, diabetes, and other health problems; then you are culpable. I don’t think that you should go to jail, but you should accept an educational opportunity to learn and change your choices of food for your children. You should welcome this!

You have the free will to eat whatever you want to put into your body, but until your child is old enough to make the decisions about what food is available; it’s imperative that you make responsible and intelligent choices of healthy foods. To do anything less that this is abusive at many levels. So show your love and your maturity and give your children healthy foods at home and at school.
