Spring Gardens: Plan Your Own Seed Vault for Biodiversity!

Norway is the site chosen by the Global Crop Diversity Trust to store thousands of seed varieties for recovery due to loss by catastrophe, war, or climate change in any area of our world.

The Gates Foundation and some governments have come together to assist in the process of securing the future biodiversity of our stored seeds. The location is remote, the climate is in arctic conditions, and the safety of the seeds is rather remarkable.

Last week, a moderate earthquake rocked this region. it was a good little test for the facility. It is designed to withstand many things that would destroy normal buildings; in fact, this design is geared for global catastrophic events that could signal the end of civilization. At least the seeds will survive any onslaught!

Your Spring Garden needs to be designed to survive a growing season that might be altered by any unforseen climactic shift or event that might prevent food from being available in grocery stores and only found in private gardens. You will want to plan this year’s garden to provide any of the fruits and vegetables that are your staples in your diet, just in case they are not anywhere else to be found.

It doesn’t take a genius to plan a Spring Garden. Just take paper and pencil in hand and map it out. There are online resources to help with this process, but if you find your Inner Gardener it is even better. It’s your creativity that makes it unique and perfect for your personal preferences. Some people love tomatoes and basil and others prefer potatoes and chives.

Prepare your Soil. Gather your favorite heirloom and non-hybrid seeds. Design a conservation system for your use of water. Plan a schedule to plant seeds at intervals, so your harvest is timed to match your food requirements.

You will also want to learn to sprout this year! Gardens Alive! has a great sprouting kit that will make it convenient for you to introduce healthy sprouts into your diet. You can add them to salads and to dishes like Pad Thai.

You will know what’s in your food and even more importantly what’s NOT in your food. It won’t be contaminated or adulterated. Your garden gives you an edge on safe, healthy food.
