The Great Egg Recall of 2010: Salmonella and Scrambled Eggs Anyone?
By now you’ve heard on the News that there is a huge Egg Recall that is affecting millions of people and billions of eggs. Salmonella has been found both on the surface of the eggs and in the interior of the eggs which has made more than 2000 people ill in recent days.
Who would have thought that this little pathogen could escape the attention of such a large facility which produces eggs for many brands? Now…people have to check egg cartons to see if their eggs might be part of the massive Recall. For those people who have no idea that the Recall has been issued, it’s Salmonella and Scrambled Eggs on the Menu at home or in a restaurant in the states where these brands are sold.
Salmonella is NOT fun! Besides the nausea and vomiting, there’s the diarrhea and the abdominal cramping. There can be other symptoms, too. It’s no picnic and there’s no egg salad that safe in the local areas where stores sell these eggs. You would have to boil the eggs and then cook the eggs to be certain that you destroyed all the Salmonella micro-organisms before turning the egg mixture into egg salad sandwiches or other dishes that many cooks don’t prepare properly.
If you make sauces or breading with raw eggs; then you might not cook your food at a temperature high enough to completely kill the Salmonella, especially if you are not careful with the way you handle the utensils and the way you wash your hands.
If you happen to consume these eggs; then you will want to be evaluated by your health care professional. You may need to be hospitalized, if you have a compromised immune system or if your health is fragile. If you feel symptoms; get medical attention immediately. Don’t wait…
If you have GSE on hand, then by all means; mix the proper number of drops of GSE concentrate with pure water and take the mixture hourly until you feel that you are fine.
You may want to sip on some peppermint tea to quiet your stomach and relax the cramps in your gut. The Essential Oils of Peppermint and Marjoram will also help with these two sensations when the pathogen has found its way into your digestive system.
If your stools are loose; then some Kudzu Pudding is in order. I have explained how to prepare Kudzu Pudding in previous Posts on this Blog, so just perform a Search to find that information.
It’s better to buy your eggs from a local farm which uses free range methods to raise their chickens which produce healthier eggs which are usually less likely to be contaminated by Salmonella. Know your growers and the chickens which lay your eggs! Better yet…raise your own chickens and gather your own eggs, so you can be certain that they are well taken care of to prevent contamination. If you’ll recall that I have said it before and I’ll say it again; support your local farmers and ranchers and growers who practice sustainable agriculture. Then you can scramble your eggs and you won’t have to scramble to check the numbers on the egg cartons for the Recall eggs!
