Doctors and the Food Revolution: Join In On the Fun

We watched another great episode of Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution which was insightful and revealing about the difficulty of this movement.

The doctors and the Administrative personnel of the local hospital needed to get involved with Jamie’s school lunch project, because they were the largest employer around town. The social status of the community was being held in the balance by these fellows who met with Jamie to discuss their involvement in the program in that their financial support was essential to its success. Good for all of them!

I was surprised, yet pleased with the outcome as the hospital representatives stepped forward and participated in the program. What encouraging News that was for the kids! If you don’t have the leaders in your healthcare community involved and endorsing what you are attempting to accomplish, you might as well go home. Jamie knew what he was up against and reason prevailed as exemplified by all parties…even Alicy and Rhonda, the produce guys, and the purveyor of milk.

Personally, I wanted to grab Jamie and the people of that town and give them a big hug, especially the high school students that were in a position to either make it or break it by their lunch choice of spaghetti. This is as much an evolution in public food programming as it is a revolution…

I was not a fan of the menu substitutions, because I am a whole grains type of person, but it was a step in the right direction. If the food is made from scratch; then it’s a vast improvement, even if it is sloppy joes and nachos.

It was delightful to see the Green Truck business take up shop in that town. We have acquaintances who have a taco truck locally who made the rounds and it takes a lot of work to prepare good food in a vehicle the size of a small bus.

I loved owning and operating my own Natural Foods Restaurant in the old days when we were considered to be pioneers to offer organic and natural whole foods to the public. We were extremely successful and even the ranchers would come in to see how the other half eats. One fellow admired my Split Pea soup without ham for its flavor and texture.

The kids will tell their teachers, their parents, the staff of the cafeteria, and the hospital staff that the food tastes better than the usual crap they’ve been forced to eat. Their health will begin to improve and that should be the real marker for everyone to measure the success of this program.

You don’t have to wait for Jamie to come to your town to get involved. Write a letter, send an emial, make a phone call and get your local school on the Food Revolution bandwagon this week. It’s a national movement who’s time has come…
