Martha Stewart Features an Important Ecosystem Writer
I have been spending more time watching Dr. Oz, but today I viewed a great episode of Martha Stewart. She featured a writer who gave excellent information about our farming practices, how the ag industry produces our food, and vagaries of how difficult it is to get a bird’s eye view of the process of the way most animals are raised, slaughtered, and brought to market.
That’s the real shocker! The way animals are treated and processed is enough to make you an instant vegetarian. I know that doesn’t make sense for most of you, but how many of you have killed an animal, butchered it into the different cuts of meat, and wrapped it? I have…
I used to hunt with my father and my boyfriend when I was in my teens and twenties in Wyoming. My father had taught me how to shoot a rifle and I was a good shot. We often went to our ranch where I had my horses to hunt duck, rabbit, and rattlesnake.
I would go into the mountains before dawn to hunt deer, elk, and moose. We would occasionally find antelope (pronghorns) which had not yet moved at dawn that were worth hunting. Once they are on the move, the meat is gamey and it’s hard to season it to make it taste good. Most years Jeff Atherholt and I ate wild venison, elk, and the best antelope all year long and we were known among our friends for putting on a great meal…when they always showed up at our door at dinner time.
I am not opposed to eating meat, because in TCM the red meats strengthen the Fire Element. There’s more to share with you, but this is the point. Our ag practices need a make-over! Only the free-range, sustainable ranchers are practicing the ideal methods which you want to support by buying their products.
I was once vegetarian exclusively, and although I eat my healthy meats now; it is one of my missions in life to educate people about the issues and get them to eat better.
