Dr. Oz and His Health Surprises: Family Secrets and One Minute Solutions

Dr. Oz repeated his Surprise show today and I found more things to comment upon for all of you.

First of all, when I listened more carefully to the Family Oz discussion and game; I realized that Dr. Oz is a man who is working hard to be a good father and a good family man. It takes a lot to juggle a career, a TV show, and a family.

Women have been doing this for a long time and it’s good to see a visible example of a professional fellow talk about his family in front of millions of people. For Dr. Oz to show his vulnerabilities and his Family Secrets on television.takes some courage and willingness to be transparent.

One of the Family Secrets that surprised me is that the perception of the biggest bad habit that plagues Dr. Oz was vastly different among family members. Dr. Oz thought it was his ‘temper’. One of his daughters thought it was his ‘impatience’. His son gave specific examples of ‘time-management’ issues with Dr. Oz the Dad being in a rush and taking risks on the road.

Perhaps it is a ‘family’ issue that revolves around time-management. If there are poor choices in the way a family members uses family time in any interaction, then it can result in anger, impatience, temper tantrums, or pushing the other parent to be the disciplinarian.

The good family doctor thought his wife, Lisa, was more strict with his children than he was; but all of his children think that he is the parent that is the most strict with them. Does he really know what Lisa is doing with the kids? Do he and Lisa communicate sufficiently about discipline issues regarding their children to know who is doing what? That remains to be seen…

Finally, Dr. Oz and his children agree on one thing about his approach to his family creed in Life. Everyone knows that Dr. Dad expects everyone to ‘show up’ and be actively involved in their lives together. So…if that’s really the case, then when the family does show up, they need to learn to communicate better to know how each member of the family feels about one another and the topics of bad habits, emotional moods and responses, and the expectations for discipline and guidance for the parental roles.

OK…one last comment before moving on from the Oz Family Secrets that has come to light since the first airing of this episode.

Dr. Oz has a daughter, the oldest, named Daphne who will be appearing on a new show on ABC. “The Chew” table includes Daphne Oz as one of the contributing members of the Chew Crew. I have chuckled at the mention by her on the TV commercial about The Chew saying that she loves getting organic cookies from a local bakery. Why isn’t she baking her own? Will she inherit the time-management issues that her father struggles with?

I am eagerly looking forward to The Chew with two of my favorite chefs from the Food Network: Mario Batali and Michael Simon, both of whom are Iron Chefs and have been showing people how to prepare food for years on TV. Even Whoopi and Joy Behar are looking forward to having good food on the set close to theirs for The View!

The only people that already HATE The Chew show are those who are staunch watchers of “All My Children” which will be replaced by The Chew in September. The fans of this soap are displeased to the nth degree that their soap is ending on ABC. They would hate any show that is placed in the time slot that their lives revolve around five days a week! If they can see beyond their anticipated loss of drama and heartbreaking relationships; perhaps they could learn a thing or two about living a healthy Lifestyle by watching The Chew!

If the production crew of The Chew were as smart as they think they are, they would invite Susan Lucci and the other actors and actresses on “All My Children” to appear on their new show. This could help to transition viewers to find something valuable about the change in TV scheduling.

After all, Dr. David has often mentioned the importance of a healthy Lifestyle in one of his lines in the last year. I heard him say it! The story line has Dr. David using a special technique to bring people back from the dead. The writers had to find a way to reunite the old characters to bring some story lines to an end, so ‘regeneration’ was the perfect mechanism for our reunion with soap favorites from the past.

Let’s talk about a few of the One Minute Solutions that Dr. Oz gave to his audience. Green Tea takes a little longer than one minute to brew properly. Beets take more than one minute to juice and drink. But the quick method for taking stock of your resting heart rate and taking a chromium supplement can be done in under a minute. It takes longer than one minute to boil an egg. Furthermore, it’s a BAD idea to boil a dozen eggs all at once and eat them one by one daily all week long. Eggs go bad quickly! It’s better to take a few minutes to soft boil an egg or two daily and eat them immediately in the morning or for a snack during the day.
