DR. Oz and Condiments for Your Burgers and Sandwiches
Dr. Oz agreed with the young gentleman who had found some easy ways to cut down on calories and add healthier foods to his diet while losing weight and shrinking his waistline.
This smart guy substituted spinach for lettuce in his chicken burrito on a whole wheat tortilla. He also used fresh tomatoes in place of salsa. He grilled the chicken breast instead of using fried or breaded pieces of meat. Smart indeed and easy to do!
If you want to keep your beef and make it healthier for you; then simply ask, “Where’s the Beef?” and we’ll send you over to the grass fed Burger site that will make you drool! You don’t have to sacrifice your beef to maintain a healthy meat for your Burgers…it’s the source that matters!
The chicken is a good choice as is turkey and then there’s ostrich meat! It is a healthy alternative and it tastes great, too. Don’t underestimate the flavor of buffalo and other exotic healthy meats!
One of the more unusual choices for your tacos is to use fish as the primary filling along with sliced cabbage, lime juice, and sour cream with some chopped green scallions and cilantro. Try organic black beans or organic refried beans made by Amy’s as a side dish and you’ll never go back to the old stand-by. These foods are more nutritious and they taste better in addition to providing better fiber for you.
We love to switch around our leafy greens and in addition to spinach, arugula, cabbage, and field greens; we find that watercress, cilantro, basil, Italian parsley, and bok choy are going to give flavor and crunch to your tacos, fajitas, bean burritos, paninis, and more traditional sandwiches. All this green is going to help to build your blood and that’s the healthiest reason of all to replace the iceberg lettuce for these alternatives.
As far as condiments go, the young fellow on Dr. Oz decided to leave out the ketchup, the mayonnaise, the lousy cheese when eating his Burgers. He’s one smart dude!
The condiments that you find pre-packaged for single servings and for general commercial restaurant use are packed full of synthetic chemicals, extra salt, preservatives, and unnecessary calories from refined sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Not healthy in any way, shape, or form.
Condiments are intended to enhance the depth of flavor and texture of a food and that is exceptionally easy to do with fresh herbs, spices, and seasoning blends.
There are several companies who are making healthy ketchup and mustard. There are real pickles that are much better for you than the relish at the fast food places. There are several types of organic and natural mayonnaise and aoli that are better than the best. You will find that you don’t have to compromise taste at all!
Roasted garlic cloves made a great spread with sea salt. Peppers in red, orange, yellow and green are delicious and healthy choices in place of tomatoes. Dried tomatoes in olive oil will still give you the tomato flavor while providing some chew instead of smoosh.
You must be aware that there are more designer mustards on the market than hot sauces! There are some delicious organic grainy mustards that taste fabulous. Horseradish, sauerkraut, wasabi, and BBQ sauce always suit my buds when I am looking a some zip and pizazz. There are some nice blends of tamari and shoyu with ginger and other spices that will become one of your favorite taste sensations. Teriyaki sauce features well on Burgers whether they are made with beef, turkey, chicken, or tempeh. Garden Burgers come in an assortment of flavors and are a good alternative to meat. We make our own veggie burgers and throw on some slices of avocado, sour cream, and grilled onions to make us smile.
One of our best alternatives to salt is gomasio which is made from toasted sesame seeds and sea salt. We add some nori flakes or some garlic powder and Voila!…healthy magic in the making on burgers, sandwiches, and any type of wrap.
Speaking of wraps, you can put any kind of healthy meat with greens and layer in soy cheese or an aged cheese or feta…roll it up and slice it in two. Wraps are very popular, especially when you pour on some spicy salad dressing or spice mixture to make the flavor pop.
Tofutti makes an alternative to sour cream that tastes like the real thing and yet is healthier for you than dairy from questionable sources which can contain synthetic hormones and other agri-chemicals. There are new spreads that are made from nuts and seeds that will give you more nutrients and still keep your sandwich or taco from falling apart. Nut butters from almonds, cashews, and other types will astound you now that creative minds are experimenting with mass distribution at Whole Foods and local Food Co-ops. We love babaganoush and hummus for our sandwiches. There is a tofu spread that resembles egg salad that most people will find to be more than edible when compared to those edible eggs!
Frontier makes a wide assortment of seasoning blends, mixes, and individual spices and herbal blends for adding to mayo or nayo for sandwich spreads and for grilling veggies or meats. Please, be bold, be adventurous…and give your tongue an organic orgasmic experience!
